I love that dress!  I tend to shy away from Mermaid style anything because it just doesn’t flatter my figure.  I am also a 16/18 (at least in jeans) but I carry my weight in my hips so a mermaid style dress just adds to that.  I think it all depends how you are built.

Also, with the waist of that dress hitting you at your smallest point, just under the boobs/rib cage area that will help.  I think you should go try a few on and then give us some dress porn to gaulk at 😉

I think you are super cute! I am the same size as you but carry my weight in my waist, so I already know mermaids are not going to be a good choice for me. I think they will look awesome on you with that hourglass figure, though. 🙂 Go for it, girl!

And about your mom being smaller than you…my sister is (literally) half my size, so I know what you mean. Just remember that this is about what looks good on YOU! I know you’ll find something stunning. 🙂

You have such a lovely hourglass figure. I think the dress will suit your curves very well.

How tall are you? It’s hard to tell in the photo, and I think the only negative of the dress could be the horizontal line where the mermaid begins- it may make you look shorter.

But as far as curves go yours look amazing and I think you should go try that dress on! I think you’d be a stunning bride!

@Rayray:  you have a fantastic hour glass shape that I think will look great in a mermaid dress.  I was a little hesitant to go wedding dress shopping too because I had some irrational fear that I was going to walk in and they’d be like “oh, we don’t have anything for YOU here, Fatty”.  This obviously was not the case, and I had nothing but a positive experience.  I was a 12/14 and the only issue was that that’s a bit of a black hole for sample sizes.  Seemed like they had lots up to an 8/10, and then not again until 18 ish, so it was hard to get a good idea of how they’d fit sometimes.

But I just had to say to myself, to be open, and if you get it wrong a couple times… so what??  The worst that happens is you’re wearing an unflattering dress for a few minutes in front of the sales person and maybe a couple friends/family that love you.  Just take it off, and move on.

Good luck and have fun with it!!

@Rayray: I also wanted to add that you don’t look anywhere near a size NZ 20/22 – you look more like my size, NZ 14 or maybe a 16.

@Rayray:  Don’t be frightened of wedding dress sizing either. I’m a pretty good 14 on top, 12 below and my dress is an 18! I was super surprised, but at the end of the day it’s only a number to me 🙂
