We are just getting started planning a wedding for next summer, and I’m a bit stumped about dresses. I am gravitating towards styles I would describe as modern but romantic. Here are three that capture what I’m looking for:
J.Crew Marquise Gown ($2800, no longer available)
Angel Sanchez N3006 (from 2008, $5000+, no longer available)
Saja PP6253 ($980 at oncewed.com)
Unfortunately, the first two are definitely out of my price range, even if I could find them. The Saja dress is beautiful, but still seems a bit expensive for what appears to be a very simple, albeit gorgeously detailed, gown. I also feel uneasy about empire waists because they can look a bit maternity-esque.
Has anyone encountered dresses similar to these, preferably under $1000?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Have you checked out any of the Nicole Miller designs?

If I were you, I’d check out some bridesmaid dress designs. Not sure which designers would best capture your style, but there are some gorgeous modern, elegant bridesmaid dresses. You could add a sash or a brooch if it needed “something special”, but I think you could find some dresses that are gorgeous as-is, and in your price range as well.

Have you tried a department store? Sometimes you can really luck out there. Macy’s or Norstrom’s both carry gowns.

David’s Bridal has A LOT of styles under $1k. Here’s one that I thought you may like for $650

If you check the destination collections of most designers they will have floaty dresses like this
check out the maggie sottero destination collection http://www.maggiesottero.com/collection.aspx?line=d

Thanks for the suggestions! 🙂
I love Nicole Miller’s work in general, but nothing in the current collection seems right for me. The bridesmaid dress idea is a good one — I will look into that. And I have been looking at department stores. Nordstrom seems to have a lot of nice options within my price range, but again, none of them are calling my name. I kind of like this dress, but I am not a big lace person so that part is a dealbreaker. In general, I am hesistant about anything flowery or ruffle-y, although obviously I am attracted to some degree of femininity and embellishment. I have also looked at a few other department stores, like Macy’s, Nieman Marcus, and Bloomingdales. Are there any that I might have missed?

- Wedding: May 2012 - Salvage One, Chicago
Maybe check Beholden? www.bhldn.com it’s Anthropologie’s bridal line, and some of the dresses are over 1k, but many have the modern, clean aesthetic you’re looking for. check the ‘gown’ and ‘dresses’ sections.

Alfred Angleo makes a dress very similar the 2nd one you posted. It’s 2166…it may be a little fuller than you are looking for but you can always remove tulle. And I think the dress is right around $1k.

J. Crew might have something you like.

I agree w/ all my other Bees: Nordie’s, BCBG, Anne Klein, BHDLN, and David Bridals. All of these stores will have ready to wear so you can actually try on the dresses to decide if you like. If you are near NYC, you can check out Sample Sales by wedding designers. That was going to be my option(sister lives in NYC) if I didn’t find one.
Once you’ve decided which dress, comb preownedweddingdresses.com, recycledbride.com, and oncewed.com. Thanks to 2 dress brides, you may find your dress for even less than the store. My Girl is a Sample Dress(yourdreamdress.com) that I got 85% off. Yes, its from the 2009 collection but who cares cause she’s mine.

Take a look at the Ann Taylor website. My tastes are at least kind of in line with yours, and though their line is pretty small, they have more things I really like than anywhere else. And they’re definitely all within your budget, I think they’re about $300-900. And they do have sales pretty often.

@ TankGirl: you must be reading my mind — I ended up checking them out again today, and I found this dress. I think it looks a little awkward on the model, but maybe it’s just her posture. It seems like it’s a nice, flattering cut and in line with the more expensive dresses I was looking at. And then I got the idea that I could have a sash made and maybe some beading added. Here is a quick mockup of what it might look like on me:
Anyway, so here’s the kicker: I went to order it, and then I saw a space for a promo code. A quick Google search revealed a 40% off coupon that worked. I ended up ordering the dress for $130 including shipping. I have 60 days to return it if I don’t like it in person. Yay for deals!

Nordstrom has a fantastic bridal suite. Try Sue Wong (dresses are in the $500-$600 range). I got my Dahlia MacPhee dress for $298 there. Total shocker.
