i’ve been looking into getting an SLR for a newbie! i have had several point and shoot’s but crave being able to tell my camera where to focus, i don’t want to have to buy a ton of accesories or spend a ton of money, less than $500!! any suggestions or experience?

if you get a used Canon Rebel, you *may* be able to get an SLR under $500. That’s a really hard budget to work with. Most decent lenses are $350-2000, and that’s not includung the actual camera, batteries, memory cards, flashes, etc…

so when you buy a camera, it doesn’t come with any lenses?

You can buy an SLR with or without a lens. Some people don’t like the lens that comes with the camera, so they opt to just buy the body. I bought an Rebel XSi as a beginner in October with the lens and I like it a lot.
You can get the Rebel Xs with the lens for under 500 and as you improve or want to get more creative you can add to your camera repertoire.

Target has a sale on a canon and a nikon SLR with lense this week. While they aren’t the best of quality, they are good for a beginner 🙂

I agree go with the canon xs. It’s sold at Walmart, sams club, target, best buy. I’ve seen it from 450-550 in price. It comes with the basic kit lens. I’ve gotten to tinker with it, I have a much higher end camera, and it’s super easy to figure out.
