I'm not a Santa Cruz bride, but my partner is from the Los Gatos side of the SC mountains and all his friends are from SC. I just wanted to say hi, and if you are in a pickle, a couple of his best friends are planning weddings in SC/Felton etc, so I could probably ask their fiances for some advice :)
Thanks, Mrs. DG! I'm currently having a hard time finding photobooths and hair/makeup artists on that side of the hill. If you come across any names, please let me know!
im having a hard time too. i will probably go with a MUA from over the hill and keep the hair person local.
A friend of mine got married in Capitola and used an Aveda salon there for her hair -- it was right next to a bridal shop (but since I'm not from the area, I'm clueless about directions). Anyway, her hair looked gorgeous, so I think it's worth checking out if you can find it!
@HL Well, since there's only one bridal shop in the county, I know exactly what you're talking about! It must be Emerald Iguana!
I was looking at the Aveda website just yesterday and saw Emerald Iguana too. I'm may visit the Capitola mall the next time I'm in town and talk to some people who work at the makeup counter at Macy's. My sister-in-law found her MUA a few years ago from the Lancome counter--he came over, did all of our makeup, was fabulous, and didn't charge very much! He no longer works there though. @JoJo Bananas, can you let me know what you find? I'm planning this from the East Coast and can't do that much in terms of visiting sites and meeting people.
@JoJo, yes, that's it! I couldn't remember the name before. It was actually a last-minute appointment for her because the person who was supposed to do her hair got sick, but the Emerald Iguana was really flexible and accommodating (opened early for her), and she was very happy with the stylist.
@glowaber The MUA i'm looking at right now is Salina at Bella Rouge. I have a tattoo on my forearm that I want covered up so I need a fairly experienced MUA. I want to book a trial with her sometime in November. I'll let you know how it goes.
For affordable flowers, check out Seascape Flowers. I met the owner at a bridal fair in January. I think she is fairly new to the wedding industry. The arrangements at the show were simple and lovely!
I just noticed you're getting married at the Mission Plaza. Here are some inspiration photos for you from a couple who got married in Mission Plaza and also had their reception in the Holy Cross Hall. The pictures at the beach are at Natural Bridges State Park/Beach which is right by West Cliff Drive, another beautiful location for photos. There's a beautiful lighthouse there too.
We're getting married at Holy Cross Church, which is right behind the plaza!
I really like the Platinum Lounge on Potrero for hair cuts/styling!
@JoJo: Those are AWESOME suggestions. THANK YOU! I just saw your vendor list--we're going with Five Star and have really loved them so far (the tasting experience was awesome). Also, my sister-in-law's engagement ring is from Dell Williams...they make such awesome stuff. What I'm trying to say is, you have great taste!
Some florists that I'm looking at: Lindsay at The Wild Geranium; Roseanne at The Flower Shack, (831) 423-3877; and Safeway in Soquel.
I'd love to trade ideas with you moving forward. Feel free to email me anytime at glois dot lane at gmail dot com!
I am getting married in Scotts Valley in just a few weeks at New Hope Church! We're using a photog from San Jose and doing the flowers ourself, so I don't know how helpful I'll be, but I'm glad to see people from the area on weddingbee!
glowawbear - you will not be disappointed if you go with the flower shack. i always get my mom a bouquet there on her b-day and they are always amazing!
hey ladies, i got married in santa cruz this past year. I know a great cake baker if you would like the info, just pm me. She did my cake and was amazing! All my other vendors were from the bay area, so i didn't use anyone local. The only other thing I did locally was to rent a beach property from www.vrbo.com. It was cheaper to rent the beach house (~$650 for 2 nights including cleaning and slept up to 15 people) than to get multiple hotel rooms for the entire bridal party. Also, we ended up catering our rehearsal dinner (italian and it was delivered) at the beach house and only spent $350 for a LOT of food! That would be the only suggestion I would be able to give right now... just pm me if you need any other info!
I know some terrific professional MUA's that charge very reasonable rates and are in Santa Cruz. One is also a licensed esthetician so she can help get your skin glowing in time for your wedding. I also know of a licensed cosmetologist who does great hair, so if you're interested, message me and I'll get the information to you!
Are any of you going to the bridal fair at the Coconut Grove in January? I'll be there and we'll be doing makeup demos at my booth. Message me if you'd like some information.
Cheers,
Hi all,
I just found this board and was wondering who people ended up choosing for their make up artist, and if they have any suggestions. I am in the process of looking for one right now, and would love some insight (my venue is between Santa Cruz and Los Gatos).
Thanks!
@Kendra - I just had my trial with Kelsey: 831.247.3482, miss_kelseyt@hotmail.com. She works at the Macy's in Santa Cruz but is extremely flexible with scheduling and pricing. Her services come with eyelashes and airbrushing, and I don't think she charges a travel fee even though she lives in Santa Cruz. Give her a shot, and tell her you got her name from Gloria!
@JoJo - I forgot to tell you, we're going with the Flower Shack. We love Roseanne!
Hello Ladies, I'm also getting married in Santa Cruz (well, Soquel) and am in desperate search of hair and makeup. Anyone found someone good. I am considering Emerald Iguana. I'm guessing they would do good hair, being Aveda, but I'm concerned about makeup. Anyone know anything about Aveda makeup. Do they do lashes?
glowaber- Congrats! Your wedding is coming up fast and you may not have time to check message boards, but if you do, a couple of questions. The person you mentioned, Kelsey, are you definitely going with her? Do you know if she has a website? Sounds like she does makeup only. Have you found someone good for hair?
Hi @chellbelly! As far as I know, Kelsey does not have a website, but yes, I am going with her. My hair person's name is Kim and was recommended by Kelsey, though I think she knows lots of people. Definitely give her a call!
Wow! SC brides - awesome! I am also planning my wedding in SC from the East Coast and it has been really difficult to find good vendors (caterers, photographers, shuttle buses, you name it). I would love advice, and am happy to share my lessons learned as well. (I am from Santa Cruz, so I knew what I was getting into, but it has still be amazingly difficult!)
For things like MUA, try Monterey, too. In my experience, vendors in that area have been much more affordable than San Jose vendors, and rarely charge travel fees.

Hi! I'm hoping to start a dialogue between those of us who are getting married in Santa Cruz--I'm having a hard time finding good, affordable vendors (makeup, alcohol, and flowers, for example) based on that side of the hill. Vendors anywhere else tend to charge an arm and a leg for travel!
I'd also love to share wisdom about rehearsal meal restaurants, wedding photo locations, etc. in the Santa Cruz area. Let's talk!
A little about me: I'm getting married at Mission Plaza in April 2010. Reception will be across the street, at Holy Cross Parish Hall.
