I’m not wearing a bra or a slip under my dress, but I’m looking for a pair of shapewear shorts to wear to prevent what one of my friends calls “chub rub”… i.e. thighs rubbing together. 🙂 I’d like to find a pair that are mid to low rise (not high waist), about mid-thigh, and made of a stay-cool, stay-dry fabric. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Spanx will likely give you muffin top, and from what I understand, they can be a bit restrictive.
I usually wear bike shorts or leggings under skirts and dresses, though they probably won’t come in light colors that would be appropriate under a dress. I also have a Profiles mid thigh shaper by L’eggs which is years old and still awesome. The one I have is high waisted, but there is this one: http://www.leggs.com/mid-thigh-shapers/ that yu can purchase from them for $6.99 (I bought mine at Walmart a long time ago, and it was a different one, but the one I have is fantastic).
http://www.herroom.com/assets-by-sara-blakely,shapewear,thigh-shaper,aset01,004,578,24.html has several that aren’t too high waisted. This is the lower cost brand that Spanx puts out. The brand is carried by Target, though I haven’t checked the selection yet.
Another idea is to test out the anti-chafe products they have out there. There’s something called Body Glide, which is made for runners. The reviews are great, but I’ve never used it. It comes as a solid in a deoderant stick sort of thng. You run it on the thighs and it’s supposed to prevent chafing. Also, Monistat has a product that is well reviewed (search Amazon for them both). I haven’t tried either, but I’ve been thinking about it so I can wear a control slip instead of shorts (too hard to wrestle down if nature calls), but I’ve always had the thigh issue myself.
Hope this helps!
