We are interviewing multiple people for each type of vendor (photography, flowers, etc). Some respond quickly, others don't. It tells us a lot about their professionalism.
I emailed a couple photographers instead of calling because it's easier to do during the day at work and it did take a few days for most of them to respond. Some of them I guess prefer to be called because the response I got was "Yes, I have your date available. Please call to set up a consult." I noticed a lot of vendors I inquired about prefer to be contacted via phone.
@Summergirl that's interesting. All of mine have been great via email, except for a couple who are family friends/aren't exactly tech savvy... in person they're awesome, though!
The real problem is that, while I don't mind calling, I wanted to get some initial info first. Kind of like a "screening" deal, I guess. My other vendors (I have them all booked, except for one--that one's a secret) are awesome, though!
Well, I think you should inquire with at least a couple of photographers or whatever other vendor before you make your decision on a specific vendor.
Second, I don't think the photographer is wrong here, I always give a person a week before following up. Who knows, she may be on vacation or something!
I emailed multiple photographers at once, for their availability and price lists, and asking if I could customize packages, etc. Responses took anywhere from about one to nine days for all of them. While it's nice to get an immediate response, I didn't expect them to be sitting by the computer all the time-- anything up to a week or so response time, I thought was fine.
I get a little irritated with slow responses. I think within 3 business days they should respond back - max. I know that seems harsh, but I feel like if they are slow to respond and I haven't even paid them yet, does that mean they are going to be even slower once I *have*?
I give them 5 business days and then move on. Especially if I'm just looking for info.
This was one of my biggest complaints when I started looking for vendors. Weddings are so expensive, I could understand why some weren't responsive. I took it as they didn't need the business so I moved on quickly. I agree it says a lot about their professionalism.
I'm a crazy email person, and, quite honestly, unless there are extenuating circumstances, I wouldn't hire a vendor who I would communicate with mostly via email (officiant, DJ, photog) if they don't get back to me within 24 hours. I think it says a lot about their communication skills.
My exception are pro's who may not use email as well.. venues / florists (though my venue contact is usually great with email!)
Oh, I have contacted many. Most were too expensive or their work just didn't fit our style.
Luckily, she emailed back--she didn't get the first one! I'm excited and she seems really sweet! EXCITING!
Oh, and SanDiegoAli, I'm with you... sometimes if you really like that vendor, three days seems like an eternity!

I found a great photographer for engagement pics that fits our style. Her blog is so cute and I tried emailing her like two days ago, via her website. I hadn't heard from her so I emailed her again today in case there was some website problem (it was really slow in loading so I didn't trust it). I'll probably give her three more days or so before I start emailing some other people, but I was wondering--how long do you give your potential vendors before moving on?
