@JazzyGemini:  So exciting, but terrifying that you have no idea what it looks like! But that’s okay; if you don’t like it, maybe you can either take the stone and put it in a new setting, or put a new stone in the old setting.  Have you heard anything about it?  If you really dislike it, you can get a different ring 🙂 I have an heirloom RHR from my grandma that I absolutely adore, but I’m so picky that I’m glad I could choose my e-ring.

If it was given to your FI, technically he can do what he wants with it.  Although families differ on how easy that is to pull off with others opinions/emotions.  But if it’s his free and clear it doesn’t matter what it is!  And it’s super special!  Even tho DHs parents split and both sucked as parents… he wouldn’t be here with out them getting together so it meant a lot to us, and everyone is friendly now which helps.

DH also forgot his mom promised him the engagement ring his dad gave her (though she had had it reworked) to do what he wanted with.  Being they were only married a couple years and he was 40 and firmly never getting married, he forgot until he told his mom he was getting married and she said she’d mail him the ring (registered/insured).

We got:

and changed it to:

ETA: Having something remade, if you don’t add anything else should just be labor cost.  Which varies by region for us it was $70/hour… though we hit it off with the jeweler and he gave us an even better deal … and beer after hours :).

@MrsTangerine:  I soooo prefer your current ring to the original setting – good choice!

@Audrey2:  Thanks!  And no joke… that thing was AWFUL… at least for me!  DH told me before we got it I wouldn’t like it.  I tried wearing it for a day at home.  He asked how it was, I said “It’s like having an open wound you keep bumping”, he said “Better than I thought.”.  Seriously left red dimple like spots where the points were.  I’m 100% anti-pointy/stabby rings lol and DH knew this.
