Yesterday I was at the Sears Outlet looking at washers and dryers with my mom and while I was on the phone with my hubby discussing a particular dryer I glance at my left hand and relaize that the diamond is not in my e-ring!  I screamed "My diamonds missing" and hung up on my hubby.  My mom was a few aisles away and wasn't paying attention so I started yelling "mom, mom" and she ran over.  Then, I had my first ever real panic attack -- I started shaking, I couldn't breath, my mom said I turned pale.  No one there really wanted to look for it because they all assumed "it could be anywhere, under anything, and it is insured."  Seriously!  I started going up and down the aisles, but I still couldn't breath.  All everyone there wanted to do was calm me down, so I was getting more upset because no one was looking (except this very cute 5 yr old boy and his mom).  Finally, I got on my hands and knees and started crawling up and down every aisle while running my fingers under the edges of the applicances (my knees still hurt).  At the end of the second aisle -- I found it!  There is was, just sitting there in the middle of the aisle.  Then I started crying -- I never cried before I found it, but as soon as it was in my hand I started crying.

My mom now thinks I am the luckiest person in the world AND that I seriously overreact when I care about something.  When she was telling me "don't worry, it's insured" I told her "it is my diamond, I want that one, that is the one we picked out."

I'm going to my jeweler today to get it fixed.  So, now I just have my wedding band on.

Has anything wedding/engagement/marriage related caused you to have a panic attack?

I haven't had a panic attack yet (I suspect at least one will happen as the wedding inches closer) but I can't imagine losing my diamond -- that one would deserve a good flip out! Having th diamond fall out is one of my greatest fears and I will frequently look down at my ring to make sure it hasn't fallen out (looked a few more times right now!). Thank goodness you were able to find yours!

I haven't- But I admire you for looking for your diamond and finding it! I would have felt helpless and crumbled up in a ball and dreaded breaking the news to my man! Out of curiosity- do you have a four prong or six prong setting? For some reason- my fiance felt so strongly about having a six prong setting and wouldn't look at anything else!

Wow, you sure are lucky!  I lost a diamond earring in my house and never found it, so I'm glad that you were able to find your diamond in the middle of a big store!

OH MY GOD. That is one of my worst nightmares EVER. I look at my ring 600 times a day to make sure the diamond's still there.

Thank goodness you found it, Cali!

Yes, I lost a tiny diamond from the pave setting on my ring and was hysterical. I can't even imagine losing the main diamond! I am SO SO happy for you that you found it! My ring is currently sitting in it's ring box because I am too scared to wear it and have any diamonds fall out. (The one that fell out, we found and got fixed, is loose again) You know how some people have nightmares about their teeth falling out? I have nightmares about the diamonds on my ring falling out.

Right after I got my ring, which is an estate piece, I was visiting my grandmother, and when I held my hand out to show her the ring I realized one of the stones was missing. We had to have it replaced and it took four weeks to get the ring fixed :( I must check a hundred times a day to make sure all the stones are still there!

Why is it that people don't want you to freak out??  They're always trying to calm you down (when in reality you shouldn't be calm at all!!)  I am SO GLAD you found it!!  I'm with you, I would have cried when I found it too!

Sparkles -- I have a 4 prong setting.  My jeweler was closed today, so I'm going tomorrow to find out about getting a new setting.

I still can't get over the fact the no one wanted to look for it -- not even my mom.  It is good to hear that no one here thinks I overreacted!

holy cow I would probably throw up if I lost my diamond.... my mom is a real estate agent and a woman looking at a property she was showing lost her 5c heart shaped diamond in the bathroom of one of the houses she showed her. They actually found it but the woman was hysterical. I can't imagine.... whew! Glad to see a happy ending for you as well!

I'm so glad you found it.  Tonight I was leaving the ER dead tired and put my left hand in my pocket.  My ring got caught on the pocket and I had a bad fantansy that the diamond fell out.  Just that thought made me sick to my stomach!  Then I realized that because of the unique color of my diamond that it could never ever be appropriately replaced.  As soon as I got home, I double checked our insurance...

I can't imagine how you found it... What a needle in a haystack!

During my 1st marriage I lost a diamond out of my 3 stone engagement ring ... then lost the whole set altogether while pregnant with my 2nd child.  I wasn't really hysterical either time LOL.   I guess it was a sign of what was to come.

I still have a fear that it will happen with my new ring.  The setting is a little higher than I am used to and I actually want it lower so that I am not so nervous.

Oh my god...I had a nightmare about this just last night! Except I was on a beach and all the stones fell out of my wedding band. I ended up finding them all after combing through the sand, but they ended up being huge and plastic - not the right thing! Plus it seemed like more and more kept falling out....it was a horrible dream.

I'm so glad you were able to find yours! I would have panicked, too!

I felt your pain while reading your post!  You had every right to be flipping out, but I can see how your mom remained calm ~ she didn't want to get you more upset.  If I would have seen my mom get all crazy then I would have gotten even more crazy and probably wouldn't have had the brain power or energy to actually find the stone.  I'm so happy you found it :)

Although I haven't lost a stone, I fear I may, since I only have 4 prongs and my stone is >1 ct.  I always understood that if your stone was >1 ct. then you should have 5 prongs.  Any thoughts or contridictions?

Again, I'm so happy you found it!

Wow, I completely understand your freak-out. Sometimes my ring will catch on something and I'll frantically look down and make sure it isn't gone...I have a puppy who would so love to ingest a $2000 diamond. Whew, I am very glad you found it...at least you didn't realize it after you left the store!

I am so happy you found your diamond! Honestly no one knows how they are going to react if they lost their diamond out of their wedding ring. Seriously I think you were composed! I would have flipped out!!! You are lucky because usually the lost lost diamond story never ends well!!

I remember when I was little my mom lost her diamond in the our back yard while doing landscaping work.  She told me if I found it that she would give me $50.  I swear I was on my hands and knees all summer long looking for it...$50 is a LOT of money to a little kid!  We never did find it...

Just want to say so glad you found it and good for you for refusing to accept the advice of others who said "don't worry, it's insured".  Had you given up, the diamond probably would have gotten kicked under an appliance and stayed there for who knows how long.  Sure, you would have gotten a new one but now you don't have to!

I ride horses and am always down at the barn with my ring on. I sat down with our jeweler when we were having my ring made and explained my concern. I know myself well enough to know that if I ake my ring off everytime I go to the barn or go riding, I will absolutely lose it. I lose my cell phone just about every other month and it rings and vibrates, so what chance does a diamond have?

Keeping all of this in mind, I have a radiant cut diamond that is 4 prongs (one on each corner, but each corner is double pronged to re-enforce the setting. So far so good, and I take it to my jeweler every couple of months just to check it. My ring is also insured, but, just like the OP, that is besides the point. I could never replace this diamond, the one we picked out.

Calio I'm so happy for you and can truly relate! The same thing happened to me in January! I was going through a revolving door at work, and my hand somehow hammered the door on the way through (I am pretty clumsy). Maybe it was all in my head, but my hand really felt lighter. Knowingly, I looked down and it was gone. The diaomond was gone, all prongs were bent. My heart raced as the panic set in! Anxiety attacks ARE very real and can be quite scary! You'll know it if you have it one! All of a sudden I was surrounded by women from the office building. Everyone gathered around me. Some girls got on the their hands and knees in their skirts! After 20 anguishing minutes (seemed like foever), a woman shouted "I found it!"! I bear- hugged that lady so hard and didn't even know her name. I couldn't thank everyone enough! These ladies really went all out! Just saw my "savior" (her name is Frances) on the elevator Monday morning, and thanked her again. Funny, I seem to run into her a lot now, whereas don't recall ever seeing her in five years I've been there. It was tough bringing it to the jewelers and not wearing it for almost 2 weeks, but a miracle really. My fiance knows I'm clumsy but still can't figure out how i managed to do it. BTW my hand was/is fine. All's well that ends well...

The day after our wedding, I lost one of the tiny sapphires in my wedding band.  I was so upset and nervous about wearing it again.  The jeweler is a good friend of ours, and said that one of the sapphires was a hair smaller than the rest, so the rest should be ok, but I freaked out.  I had it checked by a second jeweler and the rest are ok...  Fortunately, we were at brunch at my parents' rental, and everyone crawled around on the floor looking for about 1/2 hour!  This stone was really tiny, so we didn't find it.

My E-ring is a white sapphire, not anywhere near as expensive as a diamond, but I would be crushed if I lost it - nothing can really ever replace the stone from the ring that he used to propose, insurance or no!   I would have reacted the same way - thank goodness you looked for it!!!!

    What a blessing!

I actually lost a diamond earring on a dive trip. I was diving in the San Juan Islands in Washington. So, of course it is dry suit diving which means you have a hood and a neck seal that get pulled over your head. My earrings have special backs that lock in place just for this purpose. However, on this particular day the locking feature took a vacation.

When the dives were over I removed my gear and packed it up. We had about an hour boat ride to shore. After arriving at the dock, we started to unload gear. I had just put my bag in the car and reach up to my ears because someone made a comment about me diving with earrings and I was trying to explain the locking backs. My right earring was missing. After looking through my bag and my shirt I ran back to the boat. It could be anywhere! All the rocking of the boat and the holes at the sides to keep water from pooling, it could be 300 deep by now. I told the captain about the earring and was reminding myself not to cry. After looking around I came to the the decision that it is just a possession and I shouldn't be attached to items, regardless of cost or meaning (however, I think it's easy to say this about earrings but if it were my engagement ring I'd be a frantic mess!).

15 minutes later the captain called - he had just found the earring!

My mom lost hers.  But she found it.  :-)  She was doing laundry, and happened to glance down and it wasn't in her ring.  She looked down into the washing machine, and there it was, sitting in one of the holes.  She reached down and got it, and got her ring fixed.  Happy ending.  (It didn't really happen that quickly, there was some panic and scrounging around, but you get the idea.)  This was just a few years ago, too.  She's had that ring for 34 years now!
