I wish I had good advice... I just want to tell you I have the same frustrating problem! :)
Switch up your routine. If you always do the same cardio exercises, try something different. I know for myself running always seems to slim the front of me down as opposed to just the ellipitcal or cycling.
@jjmomma: Isn't it soooo annoying!
My big problem is I had my first dress fitting and had to take my dress in significantly (and it was actually a bit tight when I bought it, so yay!)... this is awesome but now that it is being taken in I want it to fit perfectly which means I don't actually want to lose any more weight. I just want this belly gone!
I know I have lost enough weight now that complaining about having leftover fat just gets eye rolls but after all this hard work it is frustrating to me that I still wouldn't feel 100% comfortable in a bikini.
Do more weights than you were doing.
Up your fiber intake. It will help with bloating.
At the same time decrease your sodium intake (its in surprising places). A piece of bread can have more sodium than 1 oz of potato chips. So check all your labels. Cottage cheese is high in sodium etc.
Stress management. Stress can cause people to hold belly fat.
And remember, our bodies change shape as we grow. A woman is meant to carry a baby and that means many women will carry their extra fat in their stomach. Its the first to gain and the last to lose.
Well my first question would be is it fat or skin?
I have lost 120 pounds and while I have little fat I have LOTS of extra skin which refuses to budge without plastic surgery despite any running, fat burning, low calorie options etc. It makes me look and feel much bigger than I really am which gets me down, especially when I put the hard work into trying to get muscle tone.
That being said if it is fat I would recommended a fat burning regimine via cardio (runnning). Alternate between brisk walking, jogging and sprinting and you will see the fat melt away. I do it daily and it is amazing how much tighter and leaner my stomach (legs, thighs) get when I do it regularly. Even if you aren't a runner persay you are really only running for about 30 seconds, then up to a minute and then more once you are at that level....you aren't running for miles and miles at a time. The easier it gets just add on time (and if on a treadmill more incline).
Best of luck to you!!!
I know what you mean! This is my worst problem area, too. Unfortunately, even at my thinnest (118 lbs. and I'm 5'7), I was never really able to get rid of it.
@lefeymw: I actually already take a fiber supplement, recommend by my GI for other digestive issues. I take 3 tsp of Benefiber at night so that equates to about 4.5 grams. My GI recommended starting with 1tsp and that usually works for most people but the Benefiber package recommends up to 6tsp (9g). Would increasing my intake help with bloating or should I already see the benefits?
@Treejewel19: I didn't lose enough weight to really have leftover skin so I am pretty sure it isn't skin. I actually don't know if it is bloating or fat or both. I did interval training for a bit last spring and then it got hot and I moved to the gym and didn't get back into it. I will start doing that again, great idea!
Low carb (or zero carb) will shrink that lingering belly fat.
@meginstl: It depends on how you handle the fiber. There are several kinds of fiber and many sources and how your body handles it can depend on if it acually can cause some bloating.
What is your estimated total fiber intake? 20-20 grams is ideal and easy to get to if you eat whole foods, but hard if you eat a lot of processed foods. Supplements vs natural foods are going to be digested very differently.
Play with the different sources of fiber (supplements, greens, cruciferous veggies, fruits, cereals, whole grains etc)
Cardio, cardio, cardio! There is no way to lose weight from just your stomach, cardio will help you overall =]
@SandyDollHair: Sigh... I know that is probably the biggest solution but carbs are my biggest weakness. I know for sure I can't sustain a no carb diet past the wedding so my question is will I gain it back as soon as I start eating carbs again? If so i feel like it is a temporary solution, which may still be worth it but will make me sad.
@lefeymw: We eat a lot of spinach salads and make a point to have veggies with every meal. I need to get back into the habit of carrying cut veggies with me to snack on. My hardest thing is portion control so to help me lose weight I have been eating Lean Cuisines for work lunches. I know these are not the healthiest so maybe focusing on small healthy lunches between now and the wedding will be good. Problem is the LCs are around 250-300 calories and when I make my own lunches its hard to get low calories and still be satisfied.
Congratulations, that's great! I am wondering the same thing. Pilates has always really helped me. And I have been running at the gym as much as possible. Also, I have found that if you prefer walks to runs, or if you remember during the day, flex your abs as you walk. I know it sounds silly, but if you do it regularly during your day as you are sitting at your desk or just as you take a walk, it will really tone you up! Good luck and congrats on the wedding coming soon!
I agree that switching up your workout routine may help tighten things up. I am 5'4, 115. Been the same weight since high school. For whatever reason, suddenly this year I developed the smallest pooch that I can't get rid of. I don't think it's fat. My mom has the same thing - she's like 4'10 and weighs nothing - and she chalks it up to genetics. No one else notices it but me but it seems to be a permanent addition. :) Let us know if changing your routine works.
You guys motivated me at the gym last night. I did the interval mode on the treadmill but could only manage 15 minutes, so I switched over to my usual hill climbing, the incline always kicks my butt. I also added extra variety to my weight lifting. I got a few crunches in but then the dog decided it was time to wrestle! The Cardinals play in game one of the World Series tonight!!! so I am going to make myself do crunches and weights through a few innings instead of watching from the couch.
As far as diet goes, FI cooks and wouldn't be too pleased with no carbs but I am having him add one or two carbless nights into the rotation. I also upped my fiber supplement so we will see how all this works out.
My biggest thing is really not wanting to drop more pounds because I already had my first fitting so if anyone has any suggestions on how to not lose any more weight or inches that would be helpful. I am hoping that increasing my calories by adding protien in place of carbs might help with fat burn but not a major change in size. Also, I assume really increasing my weight routines will help tone but not cause a major size change... but then again I don't know a ton about any of this.
Check out www.fitsugar.com - if you search "printable workouts" there are a ton of interval workouts for the treadmill, elliptical and bike that you can print and bring to the gym with you! Enjoy!
I just posted on another post regarding the ab ripper x dvd through the p90x program. You can find a 16 minute video of a girl doing it on you tube. It totally mixes up your ab routine and you really see changes. I did it 4-5 times a week before my wedding. I had the best abs I've had in my life. lol
@meginstl: Yes, the pooch WILL come back once you start eating carbs again...but if you can go ZC a week or so before your wedding, you should see a difference!
Not a long term solution, (unless you stick with a LC diet plan)...I know, it sucks.....
I'm not a thin person, but I'm always amazed at how quickly my belly shrinks when I go on my LC diet plan. My "wheat belly" just disappears...like somebody stuck a pin in me and let the air out.
@SandyDollHair: I agree with Sandy- dump the carbs. You don't need them. Eat veggies, but don't eat any type of bread/rice/grains. I haven't lost an ounce, but I dropped inches everywhere and got nice and lean as a result. I'm healthier too- no acne, etc.
@meginstl: If you do a carbless night, you can still let him have his carbs...just don't eat them :) I have been a low carb fan for about 8 years now, and I would never go back. My fiance deals with it just fine, and he can survive without pasta or make his own lol.
@jouissance: Oh I know he could eat them and I could abstain but my willpower is very low when it comes to carbs. I am going to try to do it the week or two before the wedding.
If it's just a small rounded tummy and not a beer gut type of stomach, it could be natural. It's a common body shape among women.
What about adding some abs into your workout? There's tons of different ab exercises that target different portions of your abs (upper vs lower). It seems like it's less a fat thing and more of it just needs to be tonned. I played sports and college and had great abs just because we were constantly doing core work outs.. good luck!
What about cutting out dairy? It might be just me, but I was having problems digesting dairy and had this giant belly. After I cut it out completely, I lost so much weight from my stomach. It really made me bloated, and it was amazing the difference. good luck!
Abs--You can tone the muscles underneath the layer of fat and it will look better. You should have a layer of fat unless you're an intense athlete, that's healthy and normal. I'm 85 lbs (due to slacking on excersize, my muscle mass dropped me almost 10 lbs) and I still have a bit of fat on my stomach.
Eat clean! 90% of abs are created in the kitchen! Good luck!
Hi ladies, just an update. I haven't been completely committed to any of the above but I have added a few carb-lite days (that is the best I can do...) and have stuck with my normal workout but have increased the intensity and also switched up the weight machines. I haven't noticed big changes but I have had a lot of events in the last two weeks resulting in me eating more junk than normal and I can say my weight has remained pretty constant so I think the extra work in the gym has helped combat my bad eating habits.
Also, I found this site that shows real bodies at all weights and sizes: http://www.mybodygallery.com/index.html
In my mind I know that most people don't have model abs but knowing that doesn't make it any easier to accept that maybe my body just isn't built that way. So looking at the above site made me realize that people at my height and weight (surprise, surprise) actually look a lot like I do!
I read this recent blog post on the WHY behind craving processed carbs and it was a LIGHT-BULB moment for me.
It's also been helpful in figuring out what's a craving and what's hunger.

I'll also add to say that when I start eating a lot of sugar and dessert type stuff, I'll bloat. If I stay off stuff for a few days, I'll notice a shrinking pooch.
Continue your work out routine, since you're not looking to lose weight, but tone up. Maybe research some different ab work outs that will help you in that area. Food wise, a sudden increase in fiber can definitely cause major bloating and constipation. If you're going to increase your fiber, do so gradually. I agree that you shoudl decrease your sodium intake and majorly increase water. Also, cut out sugar and eat more foods with a lower glycemic index. We're always told that fruit is healthy, yet fruits like bananas, grapes, and oranges and snacks like dried fruit have insane amounts of sugar that will definitely surpass your daily allowance.
@meginstl: what is your diet like? is it possible you may be bloated?
Drink lots of water! You may be bloated! Also you could try L-Canatine as a supplement. Apparently it helps in belly weight loss. Who knows if that's true but I'm starting it today so hopefully it works! Also, look up "foods that fight belly fat" and you'll come up with some good things!
Fiber! And I love the ab workout that comes with P90X that might help too!

I have 39 days to go until my wedding and am really proud of myself that I am finally at my goal weight. I lost 15 pounds since getting engaged in January. I have lost about 4 inches around my waist and am down to my college pants size. So I am really excited I met my goal, however... I still have that little front belly fat that isn't going anywhere. It seems like all my fat has melted off and what is left is concentrated right there! I am sure other people have had this problem, and would love to hear what worked for you.
I am at 110 pounds now (I am short, 5'1") and before dating FI I was around 108 so I could lose a few more pounds but that isn't my goal anymore, I just want to tone up and lose the stomach pooch.
To lose the initial weight I cut calories and added about 5 hours of cardo/weight training a week. I really can't possibly cut anymore calories from my diet, and 5 hours is about all I can fit into my schedule with the wedding so close. So is there something I am not doing I should be?
Just to clarify I am not looking at being stick thin, I am happy with the fact that all my college clothes fit again and feel I am at a healthy weight, I just want to get rid of this tummy and look good in a bikini on our honeymoon!
Thanks ladies!
