He's a football fan, I'm a hockey and baseball fan. I cheer for his football team (Titans) cause I don't care, and I cheer for my hockey (red wings) and baseball (Dodgers) teams. And for my Alma Mater (Fresno State) in NCAA sports.
THough if we did like the same sports, I would keep my teams...some competition is good!!
We're from Ohio, and he's one of those weird Ohioans who isn't into Ohio State football. I've been trying (and failing) to convert him since we started dating.
At football-watching get togethers with my family, he takes great joy in sitting quietly on the couch and smiling whenever we moan and scream at the TV. ![]()
I am a Yankees fan, but Mrs. Bee doesn't like them! Now that Joe Torre is coaching the Dodgers, I wouldn't mind rooting for them... but not if they're playing the Yankees.
We're both from Boston, so we root for the same teams! :)
Go Sox, C's, Pats and B's!
Toucs - I have to confess, I don't know if I could have married Bee if she was a Boston fan. I'd like to think that I am bigger than that, but maybe not haha!
hahahaha, Mr. Bee! I'm totally not big enough either!!
I really do respect all fans, and even have friends who root for the Yanks--but I never could watch games on a regular basis with. I remember Game 7 in 2003 vividly (and only can talk about it now because of 2004 & 2007). Mr. Toucan's frat was having a recruitment party. The Boston fans were holed up in one room with the door locked sulking... we weren't so social that night. That's the night when I was so thankful Mr. T wasn't a rival fan. With BOS/NYY, the winner can't help but gloat, and the loser can't help but sulk. I honestly don't know how rival fans can be couples!
I'm with Mr. Bee on this one. Thankfully, Boy and I have the same teams because I don't think we could get married otherwise! We actually bonded over it when we first started dating. We are both 49ers fans in addition to our local team (who choked in the NFC championship...) and we had a long convorsation about how we are east coasters who love a west coast team.
He has definitely gotten me more into hockey, though. We've been to so many Flyers games that he admitted to wanting to propose at one!
I'm from Baltimore, so I root for the Ravens. Since DC only recently got a professional baseball team, he grew up loving the Orioles, so we're even there. He's a Redskins fan and I root for them...unless they're playing the Ravens!
Mr. Bee, As a Boston sports fan, I know what you mean. My fiance loves the Mets and I'm a Sox fan. I don't think we would have had a chance if he were a yankees fan. I think its in the blood for Yankees and Sox fans. Now we both get to root against the Yankees (no offense!).
I'm lucky here... because niether of us really cares a lot about sports. He understands them more than I do, but I think that's a combination "guy thing" and a lot of his family care about them... at least, more than mine does. (We really keep our heads in the sand about sports - his GRANDMA had to tell me who's playingin the super bowl! lol)
What a great thread! My FI LOVES the Greenbay Packers. I LOVE the Denver Broncos. We always joke about which team is better, and it's even a running joke that my family will let me marry him despite his choice of team!!
Just last night he was giving me a hard time that our wedding will be "Packers colors." I told him that's because if it was in Broncos colors I'd shoot myself. (Catholic school has made me hate Navy blue formal wear.)
As long as our teams aren't playing each other, we root for each other's teams. But in a head to head match? LOL Hasn't happened since 1998 and we all know how THAT turned out!
We are both NY Jets fans, thank goodness. It makes the indelible frustration that much easier.
my fi doesn't like sports, so it's a little role reversal there.
he half-heartedly supports the padres (and I'm am a big chicago cubs/bears fan!), but other than that, he hates whatever sport I watch!
let's see...
FH, being born and raised in DC, is a die-hard Redskins fan. I was raised in TX... HOUSTON, TEXAS. So I was an original Oilers fan before they moved to Tennesee (boo that). And then we got the Texans and because I was so extremly bitter about the Oilers abandoning me (still am), I became a Texans fan. But then I met and fell in love with FH and adopted his team. I am now a die-hard Redskins fan too. I still love my Texans though.
Funny note... don't know if anyone here knows of the Redskins & Cowboys rivalry but... when FH first met me and found out that I was a huge football fan and from TX the first thing he asked me was "Are you a Cowboys fan?" And when I said "H*ll no!" (I really have a severe hatred for the Cowboys) he said "Aiight. We're good." ;) Now that I think about it... if I WERE a Cowboys fan, would FH really have passed me up???
We both grew up in Seattle so we share the same pro teams. My husband LOVES sports...especially football. His family has had season tickets forever. I was just a casual fan until I met my husband, now I'm crazy for the Seahaws (so sad we had a terrible year, but I can't wait for next year!) and he is so proud.
Our college teams never play each other, so he'll cheer for my UW Huskies and I'll cheer for his Duke Blue Devils...he says hell never let our kids go to UNC and I say they'll never go to WSU. I think it's so funny when couples from rival colleges get married...fortunately we don't have to deal with that :)
Woah Mr. Bee hating on Boston?!?! Man!!
We have more of a college football issue in our relationship! We're big ACC football rivals Virginia Tech (him) and Boston College (me) (ugh to BC losing 2 ACC championships in a row!!)
We say we "break up" every time we play each other for 24 hours, 12 hours before and after kickoff. Everyone makes a big joke of it -- we even have a section on our wedding website about it that I think is so funny. Last season we hosted 18 of his Hokie fans at my parents house for the weekend of the BC vs VT game -- thankfully BC won!! It was a blast. Other then when we play each other -- we root for each others teams. My family goes to all the BC games and I've been to Lane stadium a few times. It's so fun!
I am not hating on Boston! I was proud of the Sox for breaking the Curse.
I've just had some really negative experience with Boston fans. I never rub it in when my teams are winning... I am not a fan of unsolicited smack talk. It's fun when it's between friends, but the fan rivalry is too much for me!
Eh I could care less about sports... But when it comes to my Bruins- don't mess with me! I get full on into my Bruin Spirit wear and cheer my bum off!
I think my man has changed his team sport for me. He is such an east coaster (but transplanted to SoCal) Whats cute about my man, is he loves every sport. College/Pros. He wears his UNC sports wear, then his UVA sportswear- and then when I came into the picture he now weats UCLA colors- all depending on what game he is watching (basketball, football...), and I love that! --but I hate that he supports USC football. grrr.
We both cheer for both of our teams.
My FI has lived in Boston all his life and has always been into the Sox and Patriots. I cheer for the Sox but am inherently annoyed by the Patriots...but I don't watch or like football, so whatever happens, happens.
I grew up in Philly with a family who was all about the sports. I was never hugely interested in sports, but I always knew what was going with them because my dad and brothers were so into it. I was extremely happy to see the Phillies win the Series this year because I knew it would make the city so happy.
My FI loves my family, so he's happy when the Philly teams do well, because he knows it'll make my fam happy. My dad loves my FI to pieces, so he's always happy when Boston teams do well.
My FH is not "into" sports, so it is not much of an issue. Also, I prefer college sports to the professional teams, so I can cheer for "my" team ('SC) and "his" team (USMA) too. There is no real competition between the two schools. Now, if he had gone to UT or LSU or UCLA . . . Well, then it would be good that he does not like sports!
im a tried and true cowboys fan and the mister is a hardcore redskins fan.. it's trouble! haha. we tease eachother a lot. he has this crazy idea that he'll convert me someday, but it's safe to say that will NEVER happen!
My FI plays arena football and coaches high school football, basketball and track. However, I could care less about sports. I've never been into sports, but I do attend his football games. He plays better when I'm watching, he likes to show off. He also likes to talk about the game and plays to me like I understand what he is saying. Although my honie plays sports, he does not watch them on tv. I truly love that, cause I could not handle my tv time being taken away by a football or basketball game.
This is a soft spot for me and FI. He is from New England and loves his Sox and Pats. I am NYer and a Mets/Giants fan who lived in Boston for awhile. Let's just say when I left I was not a fan and very much root against his teams now. He hates it. I will say though that I said nothing after last year's Superbowl. I was very nice about it and made sure to comfort him. I love him more than the Giants :)

Being from Boston, sports are a big deal. I am a huge fan of Boston sports, but since my fiance came along, he has also turned me into a Devils fan.
I went to a Bruins game tonight in a Devils Jersey, in Boston! For him. Thats what I call love. I got yelled at all night, but did it with a smile on my face, because it made him happy.
Has anyone else changed a team/s for the one they love?
For the record, I love the Sox and Patriots and he has tried to change my mind....not happening. He is a Giants fan and the superbowl was BAD last year.
