Yes, lunch is too casual... "reception and dancing" is a much better choice. : (19 votes)

Your mom has gone completely bananas; "lunch and dancing" would have been fine. : (5 votes)

I will admit I prefer the change to reception, though I don’t think it would have been a huge deal had it not been changed.

I think that if the invitation suite is as formal as you say, “reception” is a better wording choice than “lunch.” Not a catastrophic error by any means, but it just seems a little more in-sync with what you described.

I prefer reception because it sounds like you are having a pretty formal lunch. Lunch seems a little too informal for the reception you’re throwing.

@KatieBklyn:  You don’t have to TELL her that. 😉 Lol

I actually think the simple word lunch fits with a kind of old-fashioned formality that doesn’t put on airs. Either way, people will know they’re going to be served “lunch” since presumably it’s a daytime affair. If I received a formal invitation with the word lunch, I would not think I was going to be served PB&J and mac and cheese. Reception is also fine, but I think your mom was worried unnecessarily.

I definitely like reception over lunch. But I don’t think it would have been impolite to put lunch.

I think “lunch” sounds informal since it’s short for luncheon.  But either way would be fine.
