We are having a lunch reception, so I totally think it can be done. We are also having a formal wedding.
You can definitely have a swanky soiree in the middle of the day! Let the invitations and venue set the stage for you....that way your guests know what to expect, and can dress accordingly. (Some may assume a mid-day event will be toned down, so make sure to note on your website the dress attire, etc.)
We are having a morning wedding and a small luncheon for our close family afterwards and then a big reception at night. My FH is a big business man in town and has a large group of friends and business associates. So we are having a lucneheon with soups and sanwwhiches and at the reception just have a big hog roast, a few sides, assorment of desserts and a large bar!!
My wedding was essentially a lunch. We had multiple courses and many of the same things as a evening wedding except that we just did them during the day.
Hi Alikay! You should check out this thread on morning/brunch weddings -- I included my menu there too. I love the idea of a non-dinner wedding (I had a brunch reception myself and wouldn't have done it any other way).

Yep, we are doing brunch, and I think it is very elegant and unexpected!

Hi, we are just starting out on the planing of our reception and was wondreing about have a lunch reception instead of a dinner. As we and many of our friends have young children. Only prob is that I really want a formal wedding - Do you think that you could have a formal lunch reception or would it have to be causal?
