This is JUST my opinion - but afternoon doesn't really scream "dance" to me. However, if you have your heart set on a dance, I don't think it would be horribly out of place because most wedding celebrations do involve dancing.
I've been to an afternoon reception with a DJ and dance floor. The couple was unable to do an evening reception, and they were really nervous beforehand that no one would dance. But it worked out fine and was really fun. I think everyone hit the dancefloor at some point...and a few of us were charged with getting things going. If you want one, go for it! It might be a good idea to have some enthusiastic friends get everyone else into it, though.
