Topping ideas could be bacon bits, ham, broccoli, maybe tomatoes, cheese, cracker/bread crumbs, etc. I'm not sure of a creative way to serve it though.
my FI's mom is a caterer and she was talking about one that they did one time last week when we were talking about ideas. they used martini glasses though and had things like truffles, (real crushed) bacon bits, herbs, green onions, different cheeses for on top... i can't remember what else. i'd love to do it but i think i'm the only mac n cheese fanatic so it'd just be self indulgent :P you could get those disposible bamboo bowls on amazon or i saw some disposible birch ones the other day too to keep with the rustic theme
oh my gosh that sounds delicious. I love mac and cheese
What about serving in a shot glass type glass? Though it might be too small...I really love mac and cheese.
Agree with above toppings. Some people (not me) likes ketchup on mac and cheese too.
As for serving, crocks like those used for french onion soup would be great. Not sure if those are rentable and would probably be pricey to buy.
Might be too casual, but maybe to-go containers (the bottom portion) or take out containers (like the chinese kind)
a great topping for mac and cheese is thinly sliced and caramelized shallots (or sweet onions). Super good on top of mac and cheese!!!!!!!!!!
What about serving in individual sized ramekins?
OMG! Serious? Can I be invited please? That's awesome. How about serving out of bacon bowls?
@gabrielleelise1981: oh yeah! she had caramelized onions too (drool)
Don't forget the hot sauce! I love putting Tabasco or Frank's Red Hot on my mac and cheese. Your wedding sounds like it's going to be awesome!
I saw this on TLC 4 weddings and OMG I got so hungry! I thought it was the greatest idea ever! ALl those toppings above sound yummy!!!
First, I'm probably going to have to crash th wedding because mac & cheese is my kryptonite. I will stuff myself with it until there is no more available.
I would offer bread crumbs, bacon, cheese, bacon, more bacon, maybe some ham sliced small, you could offer chicken to mix in...OK, that's just me being hungry, more cheese (a variety - american, colby, montery jack), maybe some herbs, sea salt, pepper (you can get the cracked kind with different pepper flavors), you could even serve little bread slices. OK, I will start coming up with weird combos if I don't stop because this all sounds awesome.
As for serving it, you could get glasses people drink scotch/bourbon out of, are little ramekins, or soufflee dishes. margarita glasses even. Margaritas sounds good with the bbq theme!
If you like seafood and it'd be in the budget, you should totally also do crab or lobster
A mac and cheese bar sounds great. Many people don't like toppings of any kind though. The only topping I like is fresh ground black pepper.
What about mini bread bowls? Might as well go all the way with the carbs ;-)
What about having a couple different types of mac and cheese and toppings to add on either. You could do an american white cheese mac and then a cheddar mac. And have a variety in the colors. You could even serve it on small appetizer bowls or plates that match your theme/venue
Could you use latch jars like this? It's the first thing that came to mind when you said mason jars. I've seen polenta served in this style jar at Bottega in Napa and it was pretty awesome.

The Container Store, Crate & Barrel, and Ikea all have them. And I too love this idea, I'm a huge fan of mac & cheese!
Mason jars would be cute to serve it in and would be alot cheaper than other options. Plus, it provides a cohesive look since you are using mason jars for beverages.
I totally wanted a mac and cheese bar too but the venue doesnt offer it. Bummer!
How about:
Have you ever been to S'mac in ny? They're a mac and cheese restaurant, and they serve it tons of different ways. Here's their website for ideas.
Wow, it is like the food heavens just opened for me! The idea of a mac 'n cheese bar is rocking my fantasy wedding world.
The mason jars would be perfect for serving. I agree with PP that alot of people don't like toppings and would prefer it plain, but prepared using different recipes. It sounds delicious though.
Such great ideas and totally going to do this! Just trying to come up with a fun serving idea--checked out the container store but at 3 dollars a pop definitely not in the budget! There are some smaller mason jars and other glass containers. How many ounces would be good for each serving size? 6 oz seems way too little
You can find mason jars (a box of several) at Walmart or Target inexpensively.
Is mac n cheese the only thing you're serving? If not, I think 6oz is plenty. I imagine each person would get about 1/2 a cup of mac and cheese with a little space for toppings with a 6 oz jar.
I have no other ideas for toppings that haven't already been mentioned.
OMG. Mac and Cheese Bar? Sorry, but I'm totally crashing your wedding. ;P
Curious if you will be serving other foods in addition? If so, that will determine the size of serving dishes to get. Also, will this be a buffet? It can get awkward to carry a variety of single dishes without spilling or dropping something, and the dishes cannot be reused for sanitary reasons if someone wants seconds or thirds.
We are having all BBQ/picnic food but upscale. Yes it is a buffet. Chicken, pork, potato salad, corn pudding, 3 bean salad, cuc and tomato salad, corn bread,
Dessert-cupcakes and Pie bar and also ice cream!
Late night snack--undecided. I think people could handle 2 serving pieces and we are using disposable bamboo plates and cutlery
Holy cow, I want your buffet! Delicious! Can the mac n cheese go on the plates too or is just too small?
I agree with SoonerPsych that the mac and cheese can just go on the plates with everything else rather than in their own bowls.

Having a rustic outdoor vintage wedding with a bbq. Have always planned on having mac and cheese but thought might add more fun by having a mac and cheese bar. Ideas for toppings and also a creative way to serve. Martinis too formal for our wedding. Having mason jars for our drinks
