I am planning to have a friend do my makeup the day of my wedding, so I need to purchase it ahead of time. We’re having engagement pictures done in a few weeks so I thought I would get my makeup done at the counter the day of the pictures and then buy the wedding makeup then. I was planning to use MAC, since I’ve had my makeup done there before. But now I’m interested in the Urban Decay Naked pallette. (For the record, I’ll be buying mostly eye makeup.)
Anyone want to weigh in on MAC eye shadow vs. Urban Decay? Also, can you get your makeup done at Sephora like you can at MAC?

The UD palette is A LOT of makeup… if you don’t wear makeup a lot normally, it will be a waste to be honest. I’d also trust the MAC people way more… those are people who have to pass a makeup test and do freelance work on the side. Most of the people at Sephora can just answer general questions… there are some artists there, but EVERYONE at MAC is an artist and can do a beautiful face.

MAC will do your makeup for you with a minimum purchase (it’s $40 where I live). They are all trained artists at any MAC store/counter.
Sephora does have a few artists but it’s not a requirement to work there. The only advantage would be the selection of products there over MAC, where you obviously only have one brand to chose from.
I used to be a makeup artist so I’ve tried a lot of different makeup! UD has some great products, but I would pick MAC eyeshadow over UD for sure.

I love both. I’ve been a MAC girl since I left college (I took a cosmetics 2 year program). But in the last year I’ve fallen in love with Urban Decay because their stuff is amazing. You can’t go wrong with either.

Where I am, as long as you purchase $60 worth of makeup, you don’t have to apy the makeup application fee.
OP, if you want your makeup professionally done, you need to go to MAC. Sephora doesn’t really do that. They’ll help you put on makeup and show you how to choose makeup and apply it, but they aren’t MUAs (well, some are… by coincidence, but not by job description).

I agree with PP if you want to get your makeup done, go to MAC. And in terms of buying makeup for the wedding IMO I prefer MAC shadows over the urban decay palette. I know there is a lot of people who love the naked palette, but I’m not one of them. I find the shadows don’t blend as well, don’t stay on as well and have more fall out than MAC shadows.

I have wore nothing but MAC for about 12 years now. I absolutely LOVE their products and my face doesn’t break out. I’m also wearing their products on my wedding day. Their brushes are amazing too (but pricey) yet they will last forever if you care for them properly.I go to the MAC at Nordstrom and we don’t have a minimum purchase. BUT if they’re doing a full face, you should buy something anyways because it’s the right thing to do. Plus, you’ll probably want to anyways because the products are great. The Urban Decay palatte is a lot of colors and they’re small amounts of each. I only liked a few of the colors and realized there were a lot of colors I wouldn’t wear. It wasn’t worth the $$ IMO. At MAC, you can make your own palate which I LOVE! I know you’re going to be buying mostly eye makeup but don’t count out their foundations. You’re going to want a good base coverage to look flawless in pictures!
Their matchmaster foundation is to die for! Great coverage but light – http://www.maccosmetics.com/product/shaded/158/17339/Products/Face/Foundation/Matchmaster-SPF-15-Foundation/index.tmpl
Also, I just purchased their new mascara and it’s by far my favorite. It’s absolutely amazing AND it’s long wearing so no smudges under the eye! YAY!http://www.maccosmetics.com/product/152/23759/Products/Eyes/Mascara/In-Extreme-Dimension-Lash/index.tmpl

I am a Mac girl. Everything of theirs is usually what’s used professionally. I’d definately go there over anywhere else.

I really like how long-lasting Urban Decay is. Mac doesn’t stay on well for me. But–there’s a smaller version of the Naked Palette so you won’t have to buy so much makeup if you’re interested!

I know they make matte eye shadows, but I find MAC and Urban Decay too shimmery/glitzy for wedding photography.
I’ve had my makeup done at MAC also and most of the ‘regular’ looks they apply are way more than I would put on myself for a special event.
Make Up For Ever is sold at Sephora, and is pretty popular among the DIY set here.
Urban Decay’s Naked Basics palette only has matte shadows in it, so that would be good to use.

I prefer MAC, but I also love the more pigmented look. I’ve tried a few urban decay products and always go back to MAC. I’ve never gotten my makeup done by them though. I plan to purchase a airbrush machine for my wedding.

I love both, but if you’re wanting to get your makeup done go to MAC. However, I’m OBSESSED with my Naked palette, and its so much fun to look up tutorials on YouTube and blogs for the million different ways to use it 🙂 If you didn’t want to get your makeup done for your e-pics, I’d vote Urban Decay. MAC artists are just always great!

I am a huge Urban Decay follower. Huge. I wouldn’t get the Naked Basics palette unless you had one of the other Naked palettes as well, the range of colours is just not enough for a wedding look.
That said, Urban Decay all the way. Their shadows have amazing colour payoff, blend extremely well and last forever, especially if you start with their primer potion.

Honestly I love Urban Decay. I also love Sephora more than MAC. I feel like every time I go into MAC they are snooty and ignore me…..at Sephora they are always willing to help. Just my 2 cents.

UD all the way!!! 100%
I love their foundation and eye shadow!!
