New Glarus is a short drive away. It’s a cute little town with a popular brewery you can visit and taste. The most popular things in Madison are probably the capitol, college area shopping and dining, lake, etc.

LionLove:  For food, the Nitty Gritty is pretty good, Dotty’s has awesome burgers. The Old Fashioned is good also.  Mickey D’s Dairy Bar is great in the morning. Babcock Hall has excellent ice cream and lunch! All locally grown/butchered/farmed too.

As far as things to do….State Street is a good way to waste time. Lots of little shops and things to look at. If you don’t mind cold, grab a beer on the Memorial Terrace overlooking the lake. There might be ice skating open on Lake Wingra (Vilas area). The Overture Center has operas/shows/etc. The Comedy Club is usually pretty good. Going to a Badger basketball or hockey game can be really cheap and they’re pretty darn good. I might be biased though, haha.

Really depends on what you’re looking for, and what you’re up to, though!

LionLove:  No problem. I’d map out the parking ramps ahead of time – they can be a little nutty to find, and occasionally fill up, especially around holidays. There’s not a ton of street parking on the campus area or downtown, and the parking cops are very good at getting you just as your meter runs out.

Shopping on State Street! If you’re into museums, the Chazen is pretty cool. If you like nature, I’d recommend a walk in the Pheasant Branch Conservancy. Madison is my hometown, let me know if you want more suggestions! 🙂

Madison is my hometown too! Go get ice-cream at the Union. They make their own there with the UW-Madison dairy cows. Check out the Orpheum theatre too–very neat spot.

I’m not personally wild about Nitty Gritty, but Ian’s pizza is very good. Also you have to get State Street Brats.

And definitely go into the Capitol. Its unbelievable inside and out.

Too bad you wont be there in the summer, the farmers market is like the biggest in the country!

LionLove:  they also just opened an ice skating rink downtown!!! outdoors! Looks really fun! There is also an event called the “festival of lights” I believe–off John Nolan. Its a huge christmas light display you drive through!! Not sure how long it is up after christmas, but might be worth checking out!
