Madrid is by far my favorite city in the world!  Well I may be a little bias since I spent a semester there...but definetly see the museums, each one is free on a different day.  I know that the prada is free on sundays...the other ones i don't remember.  The food is so good, Casa Mingo has the best chicken and sparkling cider.  It is inexpensive and very casual.  My favority restaurant was Finca de Susana.  Its near puetra del sol and is amazing!  Any other questions let me know!

Def. stop by the Sofia Reina, a nice contrast to the Prado. (Guernica is there.)

Don't eat in the main square, there are a ton of good tapas spots just outside that are not as overpriced and have better food.

We went to a flamenco show - touristy but so worth it.  The name escapes me right now, but we went to the longest-running, best known show and it was a blast!  (Near the Royal Palace.)

Try the rooftop bar (depending on the weather) at the Hotel Urban for a great late night drink - looking out on the rooftops of central Madrid.  A romatic, hip and cool lounge spot!  Madrid's version of a W...

Poppy- I realized my travel journal is at my parents house... If I get there this week, I'll see if I can find it.

Most of the places that I shopped at are now available in the US! but I love Corte Ingles (department store/ grocery store)... not too exciting... and H&M and Zara were the two I frequented most. There are tons of other stores around the Plaza Major area.

The Prada, Reine Sofia & Thyssen are amazing museums. I'd go to Palacio Real (the Royal Palace) and if you have time for a day trip, check out Toledo (I believe it's a little over an hour train ride).

Go see a Flamenco show! I took my family to a restaurant that had a Flamenco show but I can't remember the name... All I remember is that Bill Clinton had been there...

and eat lots of Paella! So good! I'm obsessed with chocolate, and I know it kind of sounds gross, but the metro station at Plaza Major had the best chocolate crossaints ever.

Enjoy! I would love to go back!!!

I only spent a couple days there but I recommed the Sofia Reina for sure. I loved the tapas in the La Latina section - try to find the street Calle Cava Baja, there's a whole strip of tapas bars - you can drink and snack your way down. Very yummy! My favourites were Casa Lucas and Txakoli.

I really liked the Royal Botanical Gardens as a nice peaceful walk in between going to museums and escaping the noise of the city. If I remember correctly, its next to Prado.

I can send you link to my madrid picks if you message me!

    I love spain!

Ah, Madrid is my hometown...I miss it so Madrid : wedding madrid spain Icon Sad.

Of course like others said, the Prado is a must if you love art, but I really second the Thyssen: that's my favorite.  The Reina Sofia is worth it for Guernica alone, it's true.

I haven't been there in a while, so I can't recommend any one restaurant in particular, but it's easy enough to find good food in Spain.  My favorite thing to get there is basic:  a good bocadillo de jamon serrano y queso manchego (a hearty baguette ham & cheese sandwich)!  And do you like seafood?  Because there will be lots of that...

That's an amazing picture Mrs. Ant posted of the hot chocolate (don't expect it to be anything like American hot cocoa) -- it may be the best thing in the world, possibly.

Of course, no city is perfect, even my beloved one...if you head out to the area with the amusement park/zoo/aquarium for any reason, don't dilly dally at night -- that's (the Casa de Campo) trolling area #1 for hookers and drug users (for as long as I can remember, and doesn't seem to have changed much).

Also, if you happen to go to the flea market area on Sunday (El Rastro), watch out for your purse like a hawk Madrid : wedding madrid spain Icon Biggrin.  Lots of cute tchotckes though!
