My fiance and I got engaged on December 14, 2011 and everything has been great. We’ve been taking the no-stress, no-plan approach and everything seemed to be going fine. We recently talked about setting a date (after lots and lots of asking from family and friends) and we decided on the anniversary of when we met. I thought everything was perfect. I thought, we set a date…we are on our way!
Then, I noticed a few girls I know have already said “yes, to the dress!” and they’ve been engaged way less time than me! Now, the stress and major anxiety is starting to creep in! Should I have a dress??! I haven’t even tried dresses on! Don’t even get me started on how nervous I am about the whole shopping experience, trying ON dresses on AND the millions of styles and designers out there! I’ve been looking at different ideas/styles online since we got engaged (well, months before that if i’m being honest! haha) and it’s completely overwhelming. I see something I absolutely love and I think it’s definitely the dress for me and the next day I want something completely different.
I know a lot of you out there have dreamed about your dream wedding and dream wedding dress since you were little girls, but that wasn’t really my experience. I honestly didn’t think I wanted to get married but it all changed! It’s definitely true what they say…when you meet the right person, you just know!!!
Any others out there suffering from the same dress stress/anxiety? How are you handling it? Any advice? Thanks!

I definitely have no idea what kind of dress I want. I’ve seen a bunch online that I like, but I have no idea what it’ll look like ON me, so….no idea. right now, i only know what i don’t want.

If you are getting married May 2012, whilst I don’t want to stress you out more, yes, you should start looking for dresses asap. I don’t even know if you’d be able to order a custom one in? Usually, it takes a while, but you might be able to pay more? Also, alterations may be an issue…

you’re getting married in 5 weeks? Yeah, I’d start looking.

If you are getting married next month you need to get a dress ASAP! The dress has toat least be hemmed and then you have to get matching veil and accessories if you don’t already have them!

It looks like she’s getting married in 13 months…
I advise that you wait. I’d start looking in about a month or so, just go to one or two shops and see what kind of silhouette you prefer, and materials.
Don’t stress! It can be fun!!!!

OH! Sorry guys. Fixed that! Definitely not getting married next month! I would definitely be pulling out my hair if I didn’t have a dress by now! I am getting married next year.
I keep thinking I want something simple and classic. Maybe mermaid/fit & flare/trumpet. I want to look classic and elegant but I also don’t want to look like every other bride! I want something different and unique…something that reflects my personality. Lately, most of the gowns I’ve seen (online) are all starting to look the same!
What helped you choose your gown?
Thanks and sorry again for the confusion on my wedding date!

Your wedding date is May of 2013. You will not need to order your dress any farther out than ten months, and I am being very generous with that estimate. You certainly can being looking at any time, but you won’t need to order something until, at the earliest, July. Many gowns only require a six month lead time.

@Shelby81: Thanks for the advice! I just don’t want to feel like I’m behind on dress shopping. I will definitely feel better when I go shopping in about a month, when my mom comes to visit!

@Brielle: Thanks for the info! Good to know!

I agree with Brielle that anything between 10-8 months would be a good timeline to order. On the wedding shows they sometimes say a dress takes 8 months to come in, or 6 months, or 4 months… You don’t need to be stressing that you haven’t gotten the dress yet. Your friends who already got theirs were probably just so excited to go out and purchase the dress first thing.
