So....I have been experimenting with make-up and I am getting a little frustrated about my results. Ideally, I would love to have my hair and make-up done professionally BUT since I am African-American I have found that it is extremely difficult to find a MUA that specializes in darker skin tones. PLUS...I am getting married in Jamaica...hence the screen name. PLUS...my hair is not relaxed...it's currently in twists...and will be in micro-braids for the Jamaica trip. I took a few pictures with my camera phone and would appreciate some tips from other African-American brides...or anyone really who has make-up experience with darker skin tones. I usually wear make-up about 5 times a year tops so I am by no means an expert. Brutal honesty is definitely the phrase of the day.

My hair will be similar to this (live tropical flowers) and these are the earrings.

Could you maybe visit a department store in your area, for a little lesson?  Could be helpful, and make you feel more confident.  You have a great face-- beautiful features and nice bone structure!  I think one of the in-store artists could help you find a base that can help even you out, and teach you about how to enhance some of your features to stand out a bit more for photos.

Thanks!! I am definitely going to try the department store. I tried the Mary Kay consultation and I felt like I had TONS of make-up on my face...which of course could be b/c I don't wear it very often. I have about two months so I am definitely going to hit the MAC counter or Sephora to see what they can do for me...thanks again for the suggestion.

Sometimes what feels like TONS of make-up on the face is actually just the right amount to last through a long wedding day, with photos.  I know I had on a lot more at my wedding than my normal everyday natural look, but it looks quite natural in the images I've seen so far.

Maybe at the MAC counter, or Sephora, see if there is someone with coloring similar to your own-- I know that ideally, they should all know how to flatter a range of skin tones, but I always find that if I go to a girl who's pale like me, she "gets" what colors are best to try on me.  I've had darker girls just try to cover up my paleness with a bunch of bronzer... not really the look I was going for!  :)  Good luck!

You look beautiful!! I think you're pretty enough that you just don't need a lot of makeup. You have great cheekbones, eyes, and eyebrows and your lips are well defined. I would say go with what you have in the pic - a gloss on the lips, maybe a slight shimmer on the eyelids (upper, on the brow bone), a small amount of a light blush like Nars Orgasm (it looks good on everybody. I swear. I have no idea how, but it does), and add a few falsies to your lashes, and you're good to go!

I'm also wearing long earrings with my dress!

Thanks for the responses ladies. I will definitely give Sephora a try. My fiance doesn't really like a whole lot of makeup but I still want to look like I have done SOMETHING with my face other than wash it the day of the wedding...LOL.

@jhphi...You are probably right...I am sure a heavier application would look just fine on the picture. I will probably have to maybe apply it heavier beforehand so I won't feel uncomfortable the day of.

@Laylabelle...I am definitely more comfortable with a natural look so I am definitely going to try your suggestions and take some more pics.

    Sephora or bust!! =)

Definitely hit sephora! BTW, you have eyes just like I do!! Kinda almond shaped with a little bit of eyelid. It makes it SUPER tough to find a makeup artist!!! I always go heavier on the outside of my eyes but lighter on the inside. You'd be surprised how much makeup your eyes can hold =]. I think if you went with a light smoke (maybe a copper instead of anything too dark since you don't wear lots? maybe gray? copper/gold is in right now and would look really great on you!). Can't wait to see what you come up with. You have a great blank pallette to work with =]

@fiftyfootbride...so to get this particular look....or unlook as it were =) I used a liquid to powder foundation. Black eyeliner and black mascara. I actually have 3 diff. eyeshadow colors on my lids: copper, gold, with a few swipes of pink over the top =) I added some dark cherry colored blush to the cheeks and some tinted lipgloss and that was it. I have a whole drawer of makeup that I just play around with. I definitely have NO clue what I am doing...but boy is it fun playing around =)

I am praying to the Lord above that I am blessed with a stellar MUA at this resort =)

Oh...and I have never played basketball =) My sister played for a while at College of Charleston and she still plays regularly on a city league in Norfolk, VA

@ejs4y8...I really want my eyes to pop in the pictures but they are SO darn hard to work with. Things could be worse though...they could be crossed...LOL!

I am thinking positive....I will get this figured out by the time December rolls around.

You are beautiful! Like the above posters have said, you have great features, good cheekbones, and I think the colors you chose really compliment your skin and the flower in your hair -- maybe just make them brighter for a wedding occasion and photos (either more product, or use a damp brush to apply product, or slightly brighter versions of the same colors)?

Oh, about foundation -- I used to live in a tropical climate, and liquid to powder foundation slid right off me. Maybe think about liquid with slightly more coverage for the hotter weather in Jamaica?

I'm excited to see the look you decide on! I'm sure you'll look amazing regardless of what you do!

You have beautifully shaped eyes! You could really play them up with a more neutral eyeshadow and a well applied eyeliner that extends a bit beyond your eye. I don't think you actually need too much makeup since you are beautiful as it is.

Thanks ladies...I am going to Sephora on Saturday. I will definitely make sure I ask for products that won't melt or slide off in the heat.

51 days until we leave for Jamaica. I can't wait to find out where we will be staying =) Excitement is setting in.

Even in December Jamaica is really hot, so make sure that the makeup base is oil free and you should be fine. The colors you are using look really nice. To make your beautiful eyes pop I would suggest thickening up the eyeliner on the outter corner of your eye, adding lots more mascara and defining the ends of your eyebrows.  Good luck!

So I started another post but realized that I probably should post the "after Sephora" pictures here as well. I mainly went in to get help with a foundation and basic make-up application techniques. I will be using different eyeshadow colors b/c I want more pop...and a darker application of eyeliner. The consultant (Anne at Northlake Mall) told me I didn't need mascara on the bottom b/c my eyes are naturally dark...and we both agreed that while my lips are well-defined...using lipstick gave them a little too much "presence". Overall it was definitely a worthwhile trip. I feel much better about doing this myself...

Great skin! I would definitely glam up the eyes...maybe a bit more mascara than your norm or maybe even some falsies.
