So I’ve been trying to figure out what I’m going to do for make up for the big day.
I found a make up artist who’s the favorite of all the girls from my family, she’s done make up for our weddings and knows half of my bridesmaids by now.
I gave her a call today for a trial on Sunaday (I have a wedding, it works). She’s charging me 70 dollars for the trial (that’s fine, I’m going to be a pain in the ass anyway….). Then she is charging me 75 per girl on the big day which comes up to 750 dollars (10 bridesmaids), she is charging me a transportation fee of 25 dollars because she’ll be at the in laws house with us girls all day…. and she will be charging me 150 dollars if I do choose to go with her.
That comes up to be 925 dollars for make up.
My Allure dress was 900ish the day I bought it (trunk show, but still!)
Is this even reasonable?
My original idea was to gift the girls a 50 dollars gift certificate to MAC so they could get their make up done the day of the wedding, and be able to purchase 50 dollars worth of MAC make up while they were at it. Now I’m up almost double. Also the original idea is not going to work because the city where they are getting their hair done doesn’t have a MAC store, so they’d have to travel to two different places before making it to the meet up place. That freaks me out. It isn’t organized well enough.
Idk, any ideas?

I don’t know what prices are like in your area, but the only thing that sounds weird to me is the fact that your makeup will cost twice as much as everyone else’s. I know you’re the bride, but it can’t make that much difference. Otherwise, I think if you are paying for makeup for eleven people you have to expect that it will add up. Why not just let the bridesmaids do their own makeup, if cost is an issue? Or give them the option to do their own or pay your makeup artist to do it for them, as they prefer.

I have a few questions- Is it for traditional or airbrush makeup? Does it include lashes?
It varies by region, but I am getting married in Southern California, and that’s totally reasonable here. I have 10 bridesmaids also and I am struggling with this myself! Esp. because I am going to try to pay for hair AND makeup! That’s roughly 2,000! yikes!!

If you are worried about the price, (I certainly would be), then you could have them pay for or do their own makeup. Also, you could try to find a friend who is really good at makeup and asking if they would be willng to do the makeup for a better price. I personally would not pay more for makeup than I would for my dress, but you also do have twice as many bridesmaids as I do. Good luck.

My makeup was $210 just for me. My girls I think paid $50-60 for their makeup. The $25 transport fee is totally understandable. So overall, yes I think it’s reasonable. It just seems like so much bc you are paying for 10 BMs

HeartsandSparkles: Well that answers my question… I’m in Los Angeles haha. We have make up artists up the ying yang over here, but yeah, findind someone that is good and worth it is the hard part. This girl is great, but I wasn’t exactly sure how the pricing works. But if we both have the same amount of bridesmaids and we are both in SoCal, if you say that’s reasonable, then I believe you haha!
And yeah, I’m paying for the hair too… I haven’t gotten the quotes for that yet, I’m hoping it is reasonable….otherwise the FI is not going to be very pleased.
I’m not worried about the money, but I don’t want to throw my money to the first person that says “yeah I’ll do it!” without knowing if it is a good deal first 😀

MrsPiggles: th problem is you have 10 bridesmaids…she’s actually quite reasonable, but the volume of BM is where you’ve got trouble. No matter who you use, you’re still going to be looking at the cost for 10 bm.

HeartsandSparkles: Mine includes lashes yeah, and of course the time she is going to spend to perfect mine vs my bridesmaids. I love my girls, but you know her best work for the day is going to be on me. I didn’t think paying 150 for the big day was too unreasonable. Oh and I don’t think it is airbrush. I’m not a big fan of airbrush anyway so I didn’t even ask haha.
The only reason why I don’t want the girls to have to pay for their make up is because I want them to feel taken care of that day too. So I’m paying for hair and make up. On the hair I do have a request in style, but the make up I just want them to do what they want (within reason) and feel pretty. Yeah it is a lot of money, but anything wedding is an arm and a leg, what a couple thousand dollars more in the scale of things….

lovelee1: Well, 1 of the bridesmaids is a make up artist herself, so she won’t be getting her make up done by the girl I’m hiring. the 10th girl in the post is actually my mother but that was too much explaining haha. Anyway, my bridesmaid the make up artist has offered to do my make up. We’ve done a trial and it was amazing, but it wasn’t what I really wanted, we want to do another trial….but I’m starting to feel the pressure of booking stuff… so I don’t know yet. I kind of want to do another trial with her ASAP so I can make up my darn mind. Either I go with her for free or I pay 150. Only problem with that is, she won’t do anyone else’s make up but hers and mine. So I still have to book someone. IDK I’m confusing myself hahaha.
I’m not really concerned about the price, like I said on a previous post, I just don’t want to give some girl a thousand dollars and hope that’s the best deal. haha I need reassurance for everything right now ok??? 😀

MrsPiggles: To be honest, sounds like really good pricing to me. I didn’t realize before but make up and hair all together will cost more than my dress too! ha. I think it’s worth the cost to not have people driving all over, getting disorganized, and being stressed. That’s why it costs more than that!

MrsPiggles: That sounds excellent. I’m getting quotes of $1k – $1.5k for 5 total people (including the bride) in NorCal.
Also, your makeup isn’t more expensive than your dress… your bridal party’s makeup is more expensive than your dress. I was thinking that your face alone was going to run $1k due to the misleading headline! 🙂

The $75 is pretty high, the standard rate where I live is $50-$65 (I charge $40). The $25 and the $150 is silly. I don’t charge a travel or booking fee. If they’ve hired me, they only pay for the actual cost of the makeup job.

MrsPiggles: I have price quotes from over a dozen MUA, and that is about right for traditional makeup. The lowest I have found is $65 for a BM, and I have seen some charge $300 for the bride. $300! If you and a lot of people like her, I would go for it! That’s also a low travel fee!
I feel the same way you do about paying for my girls’ hair and makeup. They are spending a lot of money to be part of my day and I want to pamper them! I think I am going to tell them they can have any updo they want, so that’s kinda specific. I just want them to feel beautiful! Everything wedding related is pricey, but I only want to do this once and I want to do it right!
Do you know if she travels to the OC?! I am still looking for someone and would trust a referral over a yelp review any day! lol

HAHAHAHA this sounds CHEAP to me. I was getting quotes for $800 on makeup, JUST FOR ME, in New York City. Nope.
Don’t do the MAC thing. Even if there were a MAC store, there’s not enough time to get everyone in and out of there. The makeup artist is charging a totally reasonable rate, in my opinion. Especially if you’re in Los Angeles. The other option would be something like Blushington if you’re getting married in LA. They do $50/per person but $100 for weddings — so you could just go in and not breathe a word about the wedding.

It’s reasonable pricing and even though it’s expensive when you add it up, you should be proud of yourself for covering it rather than trying to shift the costs to your bridesmaids.
