Oh yeah, you have to pay them. If you're unhappy with the result, it's pretty painful, but it's a heck of a lot better to know beforehand than find out you hate it on your wedding day. (I had a failed makeup trial and was very grateful it didn't happen on my wedding day. It was dark purple eyes and huge, huge hair. Ugh.)

Ive had 2 Really bad makeup trials so far. Fi cacked laughing at the last one, so i would def suggest getting a trial it makes the money worth it in the end. Some places reimburse the cost of a makeup trial if you buy a product. So u may not feel so bummed if it is bad if you get a nice product out of it. My first one was $40.00 and the second $25.00.

It depends on the makeup artist, but you usually do have to pay for a trial.  I did a trial at the Laura Mercier counter at a department store.  Rather than paying the individual makeup artist, they had a minimum purchase of products.  At this particular counter, their minimum purchase was $75 in products, for both the trial and the day of the wedding.  (I ended up making other arrangements).

When you book your trial, ask what the charge will be.  I think this can vary greatly between makeup brands and department stores.  I've heard some people say that certain makeup brand counters will do free trials, and others (like mine) had minimum purchases.

Here are my suggestions for getting the most out of your makeup trial. Start with a bit of research to determine the makeup artists you might like to try out. Speak with each of them and ask to see their portfolio and client references. Pick the one or two you liked the best to try.

Look at your schedule for agenda items that would be appropriate for you to have your makeup done. Bridal showers, photo sessions, another friend's wedding and your dress fitting are all good times. Schedule an appointment with the makeup artist for that day. If you can get one with the hairstylist for the same day, even better, as you will get to see the whole look.

Wear a white, ivory or other light color top to resemble your gown. Bring any inspiration photos of the makeup style you like with you. And take photos from every side because that is what your photographer will do. Good luck!

I paid for my make up trial - it cost $20 (Canadian Maritime province).

I'm really glad I had the trial, it was one less thing to worry about the night before the wedding, when visions of everything that could go wrong started filling my head.

We actually got a free trial from our hair and make-up person in DC.  However, she's not with an established salon, and I think she's basically working on breaking into the business.  As others have said, it's not usual.

What is the best counter or store to get a trial done? I usually love MAC but wasn't sure if Sephora would be better to go to because they have more products to choose from??

My make-up artist charges $50 for the trial and treats it as a lesson as well as a trial run on the wedding day make-up.

Yup! You pay, and I'd say the average is around $50

the reason you are paying is mostly for the products and of course, the artists' time! I know some artist also removes the makeup before you leave!  So be sure you find out what their policy is. I don't recommend finding an artist who does that~!

A trial is really important to make sure the style of makeup is the way you want it and also if the makeup lasts all day~ things to take note is how many hours do you need to blot if you need to (for oily and combination skin) or retouch lipstick/gloss. Also try taking lots of photos to see how you look in different lighting to make sure the foundation is an exact match to your skin. Some foundation oxidizes...so you really want to make sure you don't look orange~!

I used to work at a salon as a stylist and makeup artist.  We charged $40 for a trial as well as for bridal party makeup.  Day of makeup for the bride we charged $60.  As for tip, 20% is amazing and greatly appreciated...but anything is welcome.
