Hi Lychee!
If you're not afraid of makeup, I would definitely recommend Maureen Pedala (http://www.nyweddingmakeup.com/). She doesn't specialize in Asian makeup per se, but she has tons of experience with Asians and even admitted to me that she loves doing makeup on Asians. She is on a pricey side but IMO, worth every penny. Her trials are free, so it's worth checking out. You can read about my trial with her and her sister Claudia (who does hair) at http://www.weddingbee.com/2007/11/06/is-that-really-me/
Other good choices are Sachiko Yanese (I've hired her to do my bridesmaids' hair & makeup), Jacqueline Nicole, Oksana, Ai Sakai (Mrs Snowpea used her), Sissi Chan, and Reiko Utsugi. Good luck!
Hi Lychee,
I wave the flag of the girl who did my wedding www.ericadoesmakeup.com I thought she did a phenomenal job, she is chinese and she is brutually honest and that was EXACTLY what I needed!
*k*
I second Sachiko for Hair and makeup! I am using her for my upcoming wedding and I'm so excited!!!!
I third Sachiko Yanese. I had a hair/MU trial with her and she went through 5 different hair styles with me to find the one I like and I wanted very natural makeup, but highlighting my eyes and she did a great job!
i read about sachiki but she was already booked on my wedding day~! she recommended reiko and i've already had my trial with her and love her :) she's doing me and my bridal party~! you have to go to reiko for your trial (to her apartment in astoria), but she's traveling out to me in long island for the wedding day (at like 6am~!!)
Sachiko was also booked on my day but i read about Nam www.makeupnv.com and was very happ! She made me look natural but i think i photographed well!
I used Ai Sakai and loved her! I highly recommend her. She was so personable and created exactly the look I wanted for me, my mom and maid of honor.
you can also check out www.vickyc5.com. i hired a team of make-up AND hair ppl from her (vicky is korean and she's done MANY asian weddings). plus, they can travel to wherever you are...not far from LI actually. she is based in bayside :)
I JUST booked Nam Vo for my wedding in New York (May, 09) and she is WONDERFUL!
She was able to work w/ the look I am going for.... the makeup did NOT feel cakey - which is sooo important!
It was a lot of fun chatting with her. I'm really not sure how a lot of you are w/ dealing w/ vendors but I MUST be able to click with them to ensure that we have good communication (ie: NO SURPRISES).
You should check her out! www.makeupnv.com
Thank you, ladies, for all your suggestions and to you lychee for asking this question. As a Korean-American bride-to-be, I was stressing out about who to hire for make-up! I looked into some of your suggestions and feel so much relieved!!!
Can someone give me an idea of about how much it is for the artists mentioned here for hair and make-up? (Sachiko Yanase, Ai Sakai, Reiko Utsugi, Okasana and/or Nam Vo). I'm having a very small and low-key ceremony with just a few friends and wasn't thinking about getting my hair and make-up done but if it's reasonable, I might go for it...
Thank you
Michiko is great.. in fact she's not only done the make-up for my engagement party and my friend's wedding recently but we hired her to give an asian girls make-up lesson to a group recently, which was a fun night. SHe's got a great personality.
I felt the cost was very reasonable, $80 make up or hair only, $125 for make up and hair, $175-$225 for the bride hair and make-up and she comes to whereever you are.
I'm looking for a hair/make up person for the asian bride too... and having a very hard time. It seems like all the good ones are booked.
Sachiko Yanase was my first choice, she was booked, but very nice called me back right away, so was Nam Vo, she was very helpful in suggesting other vendors. Also called Ai Sakai who was also booked (a friend of mine reccomended her) She seems stronger in hair than makeup.
Had a horrible experience with Reiko Utsugi, I am furious at her. She took 2 weeks to get back to me and said that another bride was also interested in my date but that she would book with whoever put down a deposit first. So I rushed to send her a paypal payment (she confirmed by phone that she received it) and then called me later to say her assistant took a deposit from someone else a week earlier before she received my deposit (mind you I checked with her about availabiltiy by phone and email before sending payment) I can't stand wedding vendors who bid brides against each other or cancel for a higher bid or pressure brides to book by saying someone else is inetrested in the date. (which I found that a lot of reception venues do) You are either available or not avialable. She gave me a refund but I wasted a whole afternoon dealing with her unprofessionalism.
And now I am starting from scratch... I'll write another update when book someone, I am stil so mad.
Gonna try looking at other places, will repost when I have more info.
FYI, if you are an asian bride book your makeup/hair person sooner than later, because apparently they are in very high demand!!!!!!! Ok, I only have 6 months ot my wedding, but I got engaged 3 months ago and I did not think hair/maekup was so scarce.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions!!! I am specifically looking for someone with experience with asian harir/ makeup bc Ive had my hair makeup done by non-asian artists and I felt overdone or that my eyes looked weird/ hair would not curl etc....etc...
wow... after reading this thread- i went to Sachiko's website and was amazed by her pictures and work. I contacted her for a consultation- and praying she's available for my wedding day!
Hello everybody, this is my first time writing here!
I had to write to defend ms. Reiko Utsugi. You see, I am the
assistant who had a rather large role in misssweets unfortunate episode. During
this time, Reiko was away in Japan, hence the delay time in responding. I had
volunteered to “take care of things†in her absence. Well, I tried my best and
though I certainly remember some of the facts a little differently, mistakes
were indeed made,… by me! I apologized then and I’ll do it again now. This happening
was an extraordinary, regrettable and isolated experience. If I remember right,
Reiko returned the deposit with extra just to compensate for my shortcomings
and to express her sincere regret.
The good news is that this is in no way any reflection of
how Reiko does business. I hope you will consider her as all her clients love
the experience and I can tell you she is an extremely talented artist and a
very caring, genuine person.
The thought of Reiko being maligned was more than I could
bear, especially so because the above was my fumbling and she really is the
best. I’m hoping you can reference her former clients to see what I mean.
Thank you!

Hi
I am new to the boards but have been reading for a bit now. I tried to search before I posted but didnt see anything. I live in NYC-lower Manhattan but I am getting married in Long Island. Can anyone recommend a fantastic makeup artist that does work on Asian faces? I am also not afraid of makeup--I want to look glam.
It is just going to be me, snce I have no bridal party.
Thanks in advance, I hope to return the favor and get to "know" you on the boards.
