I don't know of a place to rent them, but I bought really great priced dresses @ gojane.com in their formals section. we ordered them for our BMs, they were about $50 a piece, good quality and the shipping was free (anything over $50 is free shipping).
what I am doing is giving my bridesmaids a color swatch of the color I want them to wear, and letting them pick out the dress they like (with final approval from me of course), that way it's not a total waste of money for them!
I am with Lolita. That is exactly what I did. And I told them what length too. But for the most, part they had free reign and I think they really enjoyed that.
Doing the same as Lolita, only I'm picking out a selection (different styles and prices) for the BMs to choose from. Hope it works out!
Try looking at stores you typically wouldn't consider. I happened to receive an email from Christopher & Banks ( I call it the mom store) one day. Even though it's not a store I would typically shop at, I gave it a try and ended up finding my bridesmaid's dresses for $15 each!!!! I wanted a simple black dress they could wear again, and I completely got what I wanted!
i'm having a hard time with this as well. i chose a fabric and let them chose the style of the dress, and am also letting them chose their own shoes. i think they know that i'm trying my best to keep it reasonable! also since they are paying for their hair, there is a lower priced option for a "style" than an updo. i am also taking them all for pedicures, so i'm really hoping they'll like that as well...it's super hard to make everyone happy though!
For my friends wedding we ordered bridesmaid dresses online from ann taylor. They were onsale for $50 or $60. They were really good quality dresses too. Its worth checking out, sometimes ann taylor has really good sales.
I've thought about Target- but I'm just worrying about the dresses being out of stock of they dont all order at the same time...
MOH- just bought a house and is in school
BM 2- just got married, finished school AND bought a house
BM 3- in school and works part time.
Since we were going the more casual route I let my girls buy their own knee-length black dress. Actually I told them I wanted it to look like a dress you would wear to a family function or a nice dinner out. NOT a short black dress from Davids Bridal. If you guys catch my drift. Well anyway, it turned out beautiful AND only 1 of the three girls had a buy a dress ($16 from Gap- HOLLA!). I also did not require them to have their hair and make up professionally done. It was perfect, elegant and they appreciated my understanding more than anything.
I looked on Target's website...not impressed. I like two dresses on JCPenney's site though...they're actually really pretty.
I've never seen rental BM dresses, but there are lots of inexpensive dress options out there that fit your budget. I know my gals got their dresses on Final Sale at JCrew and I don't think anyone spent more than $75.
I've never seen rented BM dresses before.
But, a good way to keep costs down is to just have each girl pick out their own dress. You could do what Mrs. PowderPuff did and let them pick any color, OR, you can give them a color and guidelines, and tell them to pick anything they want (you can even have them e-mail you a picture before they buy if you're worried about their selections). I did this with my girls. I took my MOH shopping to see what was out there, and after seeing about a gazillion dresses, I e-mailed everyone what my sister chose, and told the other three girls to just pick a dress that was a similar color that they liked, and I didn't care what they spent or where they got the dress. They all actually ended up picking the same dress because they loved it so much. It was $190 with tax and shipping, but I didn't feel bad at all because they chose that route. They all wore shoes they already had and did their own hair and make-up. The only required costs they had were the dress and traveling.
Another person who's never heard of rented BM dresses.
I second GoJane, that's also who we used for our BMs dresses and we were very happy. We found them by looking on Amazon.com. THere were other vendors like PacificFlex (I think) that also had inexpensive formal dresses.
As far as finding a dress at Target, Kohl's, etc. and worrying about not being able to find sizes for all the girls - they can call other stores. Unless it's on clearance the chance of not being able to find 5-10 of one dress style in multiple sizes is fairly slim.

I am getting married next summer and I am trying to make the cost of the bridesmaid dress as inexpensive as I possibly can for all of my girls. I know how bad it sucks to have a dress that you are never going to wear again and to pay 100-200 for it. I am looking for a place in the portland area that rents bridesmaid dresses. If anyone knows of a place like that please let me know!
