Making a Mantilla

posted 6 months ago in Beehive

I am thinking of having my mother (who is only somewhat adept at sewing--she did make my 1st Communion veil!) create a mantilla for me.

I'm looking for someone who has already made their own mantilla to share what the experience was like (easy, frustrating, cost-effective, etc...)  I will take any pointers I can get.

I love the look of a mantilla but have already spent a fortune on my gown and can't justify paying hundreds of more dollars on a mantilla from the bridal shop (highway robbery anyone??).

Anyone care to share their pointers on making a veil?  Thanks!!

Are you thinking of just a lace-edged veil, or a real mantilla?  I would actually just look around on the internet.  There are several websites where you can buy a real mantilla (imported from Spain) for $100 or less, depending on the length you want.  A real, cathedral length mantilla is definately going to be hundreds of dollars.  If you just want a lace-edged veil and not a real mantilla, they seem to sell for as little as $50 on the internet.
