We have found a VFW hall near our home for our reception. The hall has a very reasonable rental fee and policies. It is plain, white walls, linoleum floors, fluorescent light, but it is the right size and was recently redone. We are having a garden wedding and shabby chic-ish everything else. I need ideas on ways to liven up a hall that is completely boring.

Things hanging from the ceiling or walls can have a huge effect. A quick search found this pintrest board, which has some ideas that would be great for a rustic, shabby-chic wedding:

AliceOwlLoveLace: One word: uplighting. The hall we used was newly renovated, but sparse (except for a few American flags of course). We rented the lights, free shipping, for like $75 and it made such a huge difference. If you’re going for a shabby chic look you don’t have to make your centerpieces match. Take advantage of Michael’s clearance bins and Home Goods.

Drapery and lighting. Lots of both, if the budget permits.

AliceOwlLoveLace: Def. Have some drapery. A friend of mine had her reception at a VFW hall and they actually put up ceiling drapery for her wit icicle lights as well. I would totally reccomend uplighting too. You can rent them some places for cheap if you want to do it yourself. Sometimes you can find it in a package with one of your vendors.. For instance we are having uplighting and a photobooth through our DJ.
