So FI and I decided that it wasn’t enough to be graduating, getting married, and starting new jobs all within the span of a couple months. No, we also decided to buy a house! It’s going to be stressful, but it makes more sense to buy than rent, and we’re super excited about it.
We spent today touring places with our broker (a family friend), and we think we’ve found the place. It’s in a beautiful residential neighborhood, and is big enough to grow into without being more than we can afford/maintain. We also spoke with our bank, updated our mortgage prequalification based on the list price, and spoke with our lawyer (my father). Now we’re going back tomorrow to do another walk-through, and then we’ll sit down with our broker to write an offer.
I’m so psyched but also a little terrified, and I feel like we’ll be raiding craigslist for the first month just to find furniture to fill it. I suppose we’ll also finally have a place for our wedding gifts :). Any advice from anyone who’s been through this before? Anyone else buy a house right before the wedding? Are we insane? Thanks ladies!

Good luck! We bought a house a couple months before the wedding. Yes, it was stressful at the time, but soo worth it. Plus, it was nice to be able to fill our new home with wedding gifts. Hope everything goes smoothly for you!

We made our offer!! It’s about 7% below the asking price, but the house was on the market for a while and we’re pretty poor, so we’re hoping it’s accepted. We’ll know by tomorrow if the seller accepts or counters.
Our second walk-through went really well – I took a ton of pictures, we discussed pros and cons like adults, and we were still really excited about it. I don’t want to post any pics unless our offer is accepted (don’t want to jinx it), but I’ll post later if we’re on. Thanks for all the support!

Congrats!! Hope you get the house! We bought my first/his second home in 2009, right after we got engaged. Luckily he made $90,000 from the sale of his previous home, so we were able to purchase the furniture we wanted to fill our home. My advice is to take your time picking out quality pieces. If you can wait for awhile to buy that better dining room set, couch, whatever, do! You don’t want to buy something that’s just going to fall apart in a year or two.

@Ryansgirl: That’s really good advice. I don’t want rooms to sit empty, but my parents are in the process of moving to a smaller place, so I bet they’ll have some stuff we can take, and we’ll probably get an extra couch off craigslist or something until we can afford a nice one.
Our agent called us this morning – the sellers counter-offered, but they came down a lot. We made another offer, so now we’re just waiting anxiously to hear from our agent.
WE’RE BUYING A HOUSE TODAY!!!

Good luck! Hope it turns out well for you! Let us know what happens with your second offer 🙂

We bought a house! Our second offer was countered again (they split the difference), but we held firm and the seller eventually accepted it! It was so exciting. We actually got the call from our agent a half hour before we needed to leave to have our engagement pics taken, so we were scrambling to print and fax and all that. But we’re officially in business, so now it’s just inspections and mortgages and whatnot.
FI and I have been beaming all day (alternating with stunned disbelief). Seriously, I can’t wait to see how our e-pics turn out, because we definitely zoned out a bit. But anyway, so psyched, and thanks for all the support!

Congrats!!! Way to hold your ground and win the battle!! I wish we had the balls to do that, but we wanted it too much and gave in after a few ruonds negotiations and were were down to bickering about 100’s of dollars. hahaha.
