What you are describing is not an elopement, but a small destination wedding. By definition, you cannot include parents in an elopement.

@mrssoontobeh:  If you stop calling it an “elopement” your mom might come around more easily. An elopement would be you and your SO running off unannounced to get married in secret. Usually, there are no guests at all or maybe just a a very few best friends. What you are speaking of is an intimate destination wedding. Such an affair includes family the same way any other wedding does.

If your mom still wants the big party, the compromise is to have a second reception or a meet-and-greet at some later date that your mother hosts.

I think the B&B was using the term loosely, but what you are describing is an intimate wedding.  I wonder too if you just call it that, then your mom would not be so upset.  I mean she can still help with flowers, bouquet, dinner, maybe some place settings or favors all for an intimate wedding.

You basically just don’t want a tons of people there, right?  But your mom does?  Is this the main issue?   You said yourselve you don’t have a ton of people you’d invite – who does she propose inviting that you already haven’t?

Because what you described is still a wedding with guests and a dinner afterwards (aka the reception part).

However you said you aren’t even engaged yet.  This is like my mother giveing me guilt trips about living so far way from her imaginary non-existant grandchildren!  I’m not even having kids, but my point is try not to stress over it now!
