I think that your dresses are beautiful, and that you should go ahead and try! I'm all about DIY!
My one big BUT, is that you should get to it and do it very very soon, so that you'll still have time to at least go out and buy a sample dress, just in case the unthinkable happens and you need a back-up dress!
I think it would be a great idea as long as you can handle your stress level and still enjoy doing it. I have seen some threads on here where other fellow bees have brought up the topic not sure if they actually went through with it. LOL
BTW those dresses you made are FAB. I think it would be more of an extreme idea if you never even touched a sewing machine before. LOL
Holy crap I wish I was talented enough to make a dress like the ones you've already made! I tried to make a pillow once and it was an epic fail! Anywaaaaay, I think, if you are willing to practice a lot before the finished produc, this isn't bad idea. I'd be worried but you're obviously really good. And I understand not wanting to spend so much on a dress. I think I'd start now, and see what happens, that way you'll have time to order a dress if you don't like the end result.
I think that is an awesome idea if you have the creative chops for such a task! My sister is a seamstress and extremely creative as well. I think when the time comes for her, she might consider doing something along those lines... just do it sooner than later incase you are not 100% happy with the result... you can go out and purchase a dress that you like.
I just wanted to say that the dress you posted was my original dress inspiration! I saw that dress and absolutely fell in love with it! I was too scared to trust someone to make it for me, so I ended up going a different route.
I think you should go for it! Like others have said, give yourself a lot of time in case you don't like the way it turns out, so that you have other options.
I voted for you to try it! But I'll give you a caveat........ do you have a backup plan? And how crushed would you be if it didn't turn out like you liked? If you're willing to be pretty chill about it, you have SOME kind of backup plan, and you have the time... I'd say go for it!! The dresses you made are beautiful and i think it'd be awesome.
It doesn't hurt to try it out. It could be very rewarding.
Good lord you're super talented! Definietly make your dress . . . hell wanna make mine?!
Those dresses you posted look great and not too far from your inspiration dress, I think you're gunna do fabulously well. Good luck and make sure to post pictures!
@Tulip61110 I know! That dress is amazing!
Oh yes everyone - forgot to mention - I've already ordered a back-up dress - it's just something simple and I can make it cute if this endevor doesn't work out.
Just didn't know if I'm just going a little bit too crazy here and should just pick something from a store and call it a day.
Thanks for the encouragement...I'll post pics if it turns out...and maybe even if it doesn't - because we could all use a good laugh right?
I made mine (and I don't consider myself to be a great seamstress) and it turned out as well as anything I've seen in a magazine. Go for it :)
I was going to make my gown, but decided not too because the one I wanted had a ton of bead work, embroidery, and buttons. It would have also cost me more to make it than to just purchase the one that I have now. If you are confident that you can do this and be happy with the results, I say go for it. And good luck. I am making my girls gowns, but they aren't as intricate.
I accidentally voted "No" when I meant "YES!!!" ::face palm::
Girl, if I had your skills, I'd make my own dress in a jiffy! However, I say that should be one of the first things you tackle on your list because you want it to be just right and have time for everything else!
Best of luck--post pictures as you go, please!
Of COURSE you can do it! Those dresses you made are fabulous! A wedding dress isn't any harder, it's just white! Make a trial one out of cheap fabric that drapes like your "real" fabric and you're good to go - but have a friend to help you with the alterations (and hem). Good luck - if you do it please post it!!! I made my own wedding dress, it was exactly what I wanted. And cheapppp.
It looks like you definitely have the skill to make your own dress, so as long as you have the time, I say got for it! Can't wait to see the results!
After trying on dresses and found out that i can't afford the dress that i love, i just wish that i could make my own dress! So go for it and start right now, it's gonna be hard but you can do it!
K... you definitely have the skill! Nice dresses :)
I did vote that you leave it to the pros-- but that was before I saw your handiwork! A few of the Bee's (Sewing & Poodle) have done it. So now I want to re-vote! I say go for it!!

That one is similar.. I see this post is 1 year old, can we see a pic if you made it!
Do it! But do it fast! Don't leave it till the last minute. Give yourself enough time to go dress shopping if you need to.
Also, do you care if your FI sees the dress beforehand? Because if you live together it might be hard to hide it from him if you are making it yourself.
I say go for it!
Since you already ordered a back-up, you have nothing to lose!!
I think you can handle the job but if you are hesitant you can order one based from the picture from China and it will run you about $400 and under. I think the average price is about $250. With your talent I am sure you can touch up any alterations if needed. Usually, they are a good fit right out of the box if you provide appropriate and professional measurements.
Now when it comes to materials there are a few that you should consider. I hear that if you request specific materials then they will kindly accommodate.
1t choice if you have time to wait- Milly's Bridal(all their work is wonderful but it seems to be time consuming for those in a rust)
2nd choice- Coral's bridal- I have heard wonderful things about their material and they seem to do an equisite job.
3rd choice- Dressilyme- I have actually ordered 2 gowns from them and the quality is amazing. It looks store bought and I love the details and customer care. They have been truly wonderful to work with for my wedding. I didn't want to spend the $2,500 for the style I loved and I needed two dresses for my two ceremonies.
I am sure you are wondering why my top choice is on #3. Well I procrastinated on purchasing a dress because my styles changed often and we also had a short engagement so I didn't use Milly's Bridal.
I didn't choose Corals Bridal because they seemed similar enough to Dressilyme. However, I adored Corals explanation of materials. Thats why I think they may be great for you. Many have told me that they will always do a request for specifics.
Now my company is #1 in my book. However, I never asked them for specfic fabrics. I trusted their suggestion and their design. Dressilyme is has exceeded my expectations.
Ok so to sum it all up. If you make your own gown I am sure you will have a joyful experience. I can't sew a button.
But if you choose a custom designer then you can always work from their design if you feel there is more that will be needed. Also you can ask any of these for sample images of their work and I am sure they will provide you with viable quality.
By the way I love your gown! It is gorgeous!!!!!!
Good luck and please post your results.

Okay so I've searched and searched for the perfect dress but I keep coming up empty handed. So I'm seriously considering making my own dress...
AHHH! Everyone mental scream about the disaster it could be.
However, it's not a totally crazy idea because I used to (once-upon-a-time) make pageant gowns so it wouldn't really be that big of a stretch (or at least that's what I keep telling myself).
I'm planning something kind of flowy dress in silk charmeuse and would love something similar to this (but I don't dig the cap sleeves) - I know that there is a similar wedding gown but did I mention I'm not down with spending $3000 on a gown?
Below are a couple of dresses I've made (sorry so small). What do you think? Should I take up the challenge? Or have I taken DIY a step too far?
