Wow it's a very special project that you'll get to accomplish all together. I think it's wonderful!
I have not done this (I'll be lucky if I can make my own programs without a major fail) but I just wanted to comment and say how cool I think it is that you, your daughter and mom are all working on this together!
That sounds so cool!!
My Mom made her own dress and her BM's dress. This was back in the 70s when se worked as a seamstress.

I was showing my mother a dress that I absolutely loved but I have a very strict budget - so strict in fact that I am not likely going to even be wearing a "wedding" gown. She took one look at it and said "oh, I could make that for you no problem!"
It is an empire waist style so it doesn't require a ton of fabric - the expensive parts will be embellishments and lace etc.
So, we looked at other dresses and picked out different features that we would like to see incorporated into one dress and we are probably going to make it ourselves!
Has anyone else done this? How did it turn out? My mom is a very experienced seamstress so I am not concerned about that and the best part is that while I cannot sew (mom will be teaching me as we make the dress), my oldest daughter does so all three of us can make my gown together. The even better part is that we are all the first born daughters of the first born daughters back 4 generations or more which I thought was pretty cool too :)
