I would like to make us our own an engagement party in our house in June our wedding is in July but I’m not sure how to go about it. We live in Florida and we are getting married in Ny so we want to celebrate with out co-workers here who will not be at the wedding and also a way to get some gifts. How should we go about making it? It is ok that we are going to make our own party since our families are up north?

@Lisamr: It might be better to wait until after the wedding and have a “celebration” at home.
It’s generally frowned upon to have a pre-wedding party and invite people who are not invited to the wedding ESPECIALLY if you are looking for gifts.
It’s very “gift grabby”. It’s fine to want to get together and celebrate with people, but you might want to do it after the wedding rather than before so people don’t see it as a gift grab party.

LOL, I guess I can appreciate your honesty! But honestly, that’s exactly the way it’s going to come across. If you throw your own party at which people tend to give gifts, then yes, it’s a total gift grab. You’re not going to be fooling anyone.
Plus, as Kat pointed out, it’s not appropriate to invite people to some wedding-related events, but not to the actual wedding. Her idea to celebrate after the fact was a good one, as well. But don’t throw a gift grab and call it an engagement party.
