Muh-k-ear-uh

So like a PP said, with the “ear” sound for the “ir” in the name (like the Spanish word “ir”).

I also thought it was Ma-Kear-Uh phonetically. What about just Kira? Do you have to have the “Ma” in front?

I pronounced it your way, but maybe because I used to watch a lot of Japanese dramas and anime.

Agree with PP’s.

I think Makaira would make me say Mak-i-ra, but I could also see people pronouncing it Mak-ay-ra, so I don’t know if that is any better . . .

As a Swede (living in Canada though) I would definitely pronounce it with a “Mah” sound in the beginning, and then just “kera”.

Yeah, sorry but my first thought was Ma-KEER-ah. How about Makaira? I think it looks really pretty and exotic spelt that way and I’d pronounce it Ma-KYE-ra.

ArcadiaRose:  +1! I like the alternate spelling and I think it would make me pronounce it the way the OP wants!

Makaira I like better than makyra, I have some strong opinions about names with unnecessary y’s! Sydney is usually more of a troublemaker than Sidney, and forget about a jordynn or a madysyn being anything but a pain in the ass.

Muh-keer-uh

babeba:  So true. I’m a high school teacher, and though it sounds bad to generalize, the “Y”s are totally trouble makers. I just had a Jordyn come back from the alternative school this week.

I agree with most of the pps, I pronounced it Muh-Kear-Uh. I also don’t like Makaira, because I would pronounce that Muh-Kay-Ruh. Even if you put the y in there I think I’d also pronounce it Muh-Kear-Uh.

I pronounced it as though it rhymed with Shakira.

I got some of the letters mixed up (im mildly dyslexic) and pronounced it mah-ree-kah which is “marica” which is not a very nice word in Spanish. If your child has any Spanish-speaking classmates, she’ll probably get teased mercilessly once they mis-pronounce it just once.
