We're doing this! I don't think anyone will care/notice different suits. Plus, I don't want my wedding party to look like a herd of sheep. My BMs are choosing their own LBD, so I guess our whole WP is one big mis-matched mess!
I've seen quite a lot of people do this and it looks great!
I think this will look great! just have dress shirts and or ties that pull the look all together. I think this is a great idea!!!
definitely not a bad idea! Though, you know, men can rent suits and tuxes for next to nothing....
thanks for the votes everyone! and i'm glad we aren't reinventing the wheel on this, it seems more popular than i thought!
We did this. All the guys wore their own black suit. I think it looked great.
@sunshinebride- Actually you can't rent suits. At least a whole bunch of us have looked and not found any place that rents anything but tuxes. Let us know if you've found a place that rents suits!
I think it's a great idea. We only have a Best Man and then my Dad needs a suit as well. We don't want tuxedos and we found out it's about $175 to rent a decent tux anyway. Why not spend a little more and own a suit. We are just giving the Best Man the type of fabric that FI's suit will be and having him get something similar but in a cut that looks good on him.
oh wow missomally, the guys look fantastic!! i don't know all that much about men's fashion, and honestly i can't even tell that the suits don't match!
@misomallay - I couldn't tell that the suits were different, even when I looked, are they at least all 2 button?
@arizonabride - my mom called me when she went with my bro to rent a prom tux last year and said she saw rental suits. I'm 90% sure they were at Men's Wharehouse or Mr. Tux. They even told her they could do measurements on short notice for out OOT groomsmen.
To the real question. I think this will look fine but maybe you should see if the guys already own black suits. This was our plan until we found out some of the GM only had navy or brown or pinstriped suits (I was suprised) so instead of asking them to buy a new suit we're planning on doing rental tuxes unless we come across a suit for less than the cost of a rental.
@arizonabride - you can rent suits...I was just in the mall the other day at a tuxedo rental store that sells AND rents suits...this is in Virginia right outside of DC so I cant speak for anywhere else, but thats the type of place you should look!
Independent tux shops rent suits, and most have them in several colors/styles. The one place that doesn't rent suits is Mens Wearhouse (except for boys), since the whole reason they're in the tuxedo business to begin with is they'd like to sell more suits.

so, my fi and i had an idea for our groomsmen, but i've never heard of anyone else doing this and i'm not sure if it'll be a really good idea, or if it will just look bad!
we are planning on having the groomsmen wear suits, but rather than asking them all to buy one specific suit, or rent one, we were thinking of just asking them to wear a black suit that they already have, or buy a black suit if they don't have (most the guys will have one--my fi feels bad making them buy a new suit). so, it would be like the boy version of a little black dress-- they wouldn't exactly match, but then we'd buy them matching ties so it'd pull the look together.
good idea? or will it look crazy different? thoughts?
