Hi!! Actually I am a bee coming from Malta!! My country is a sunny island with nice beaches and loads of culture. One can visit historical places such as Mdina and Valletta or go clubbing in Paceville. If you are visiting in summer, be prepared for the hot weather, however you will not miss the village feasts where you can enjoy spectacular firework shows. Enjoy!
As somebody who's grown up in Europe, I've definitely heard of Malta and would definitely like to visit it myself one day.
I've had quite a few friends visit, and one couple actually honeymooned there, and they had nothing but praise for it, so I think you'll love it.
If you don't mind my asking, how much did they whole thing cost for someone from the US?
p.s. Why did you say 'Malta Island' when Malta is its own country?
I spent 4 days in Malta last year, and I wish I had spent four months. I love that island; I went in the dead of February and it was warm and beautiful. There was so much I could have seen, and I definitely want to go back. I loved everything about my trip.
@shaunna: Hi Shaunna,I'm actually coming from Germany so I wouldn't know about US flights but ours were quite reasonable although they involve landing at 1:30am! I think we paid about 200 EUR per person. We also found hotel prices to be reasonable. I say Malta Island because when I look up the weather or an official address it always said, Malta, Malta Island. I may be wrong but I think Gozo is also part of Malta the country.
@zahra: I'll be there Friday morning, any tips? Looks like the weather will be just about 20 degrees. We'll have a renatl car so I'd be happy if you could share the best beach and some local restaurants.
@GoldfishPie: Glad to hear you liked it, I'm so looking forward to our trip!
@slicey19: Oh, ok. I thought you were going to Malta the country, not just Malta the island that's part of Malta the country.
I don't know why I got the impression that you were from the US. Yes, I expect that going from within Europe shouldn't be too expensive.
Anyway, I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time. Don't forget to post pics :)
I was quite dissapointed in it. Hope you like it more than I did. The pretty photos from there are seriously photoshopped.
Malta consists of 2 islands. I assume you'll be visiting both. The history is on one and the nature is on the other, they are a very short ferry ride away from each other.
I spent a summer in Malta (Valetta) when I was 15. It's very pretty, the local festivals are really fun. Paceville is CRAZY (I think that was my first "clubbing" experience). I don't think we ever saw a traditional type sandy beach, mostly big rocks that people swam off and man, that water was COLD! But we were 15 and not exactly terribly mobile, so we didn't get to travel on a whim. Everyone spoke English. The buses were old school 60s buses painted bright yellow which was SO adorable. We took a boat over to Gozo which was beautiful, I'd highly recommend a little tour where you can get off and jump in the water and swim around a bit :) It's been 15 years since I was there, so I'm sure the island has been developed more since we were there.
@slicey19: The weather here is already quite warm. If you like sandy beaches, then you cannot miss Mellieha bay and Golden Bay. If you like rocky beaches, then make sure to visit Wied iz Zurrieq, where you can take a boat trip in order to see some spectacular scenes.
Malta is the actual country and it is composed of three islands, Malta (being the main one), Gozo, and Comino (uninhabited other than a hotel last I heard). It is definitely a picturesque country (I'm of Maltese descent and have visited many times).
@Atalanta: the "pretty photos" that are surely photoshopped.. are not.
Here are some from my last trip in 2008 (this was at the end of December). Unfortunately it was a really short trip (less than 4 days) so I didn't get too many photos!

@leembee: Thanks for clearing up the Island/country issue with some authority, that's as I understood it but I never actually knew for sure! Also, thanks for sharing those photos, nithing better than some great photos while packing for a trip!
@zahra: I love all beaches, especially those hich are not particuarly tourist spots so I'll put those on my list. Thanks for the local view. Looks like the sun will remain all week :)
@leembee: um well my point exactly thoes arn't pretty. They really don't entice me to go there. sorry
No need for namecalling, but it is pretty rude to say someone's pictures aren't pretty. No one is forcing you to go to Malta, or even look at the pictures, Atalanta. Here are mine! (Atalanta, avert your eyes, I wouldn't want you to puke on your keyboard)

Thanks for sharing pictures bees! I am really proud that people who do not live locally share these beautiful pictures of my country. I find that you are very intelligent people who can appreciate history and culture. Thanks again!
My Husband has been TWICE and LOOOOOOOVED It, he still talks about going back!!! One day!!!
@GoldfishPie: Thanks for sharing your pictures too! I'm going insane in the office today, stupid 11:55pm flight!
@GoldfishPie: well I wouldn't say that if they weren't posted for me, I said that all nice pics from Malta are seriously photoshopped and you helped prove that point too, thanks!
@Atalanta: they weren't posted for you.. they were posted for slicey,, after all this thread is about her and her trip there!
@Atalanta: WTF? I've never seen you hostile on a thread before. You're not crazy about Malta, you expressed your opinion, but no need to insult everyone. Step away from the keyboard and go get a cupcake or something.
@JrzyGurl: I don't think I insulted anyone personally, just malta itself. My pics are horrible too I mean look at this:

Vs:
How disapointed was I when I saw the latter.
And I would love a cupcake!
@Atalanta: If you're implying that my pictures are photoshopped, they're not. I unloaded them from my camera, and right onto the internet. Maybe you just need a better camera, or some tips on photo composition :)
I've been to Malta, and it wasn't really a place I'd go for a honeymoon. The beaches had a lot of refuse. However, so many people here love it that I don't really know what to say about that. We went in June; maybe there was something funky that month in terms of beach cleaning. I will say that I also spent time on Perissa Beach on santorini, and it was pretty much a life highlight.
@mssnapdragon: I'm threadjacking again, but how did you decide to go to Malta? It's popular with Europeans looking for a holiday in the Med, but I can't imagine it would be well-known to Americans (assuming you're from the US).
@shaunna: It was part of a cruise. I went with my sister - I actually blogged about it back in summer of '09!
Malta is a beautiful place with a beautiful culture. As a Catholic country it has a lot of amazing churches, and the history is very full and varied. You could sight-see all day every day for months and still have plenty left to see. The people are lovely. The beaches are fantastic and you must visit the beautiiful city of Valletta. We went four years ago and loved it- enjoy!

Just wondering if anyone has been to the European Island of Malta? We leave tomorrow and will be there until Easter. I read many reviews on Trip Advisor before booking but ultimatley, they were split between people who loved it and those who were disapointed. It sounds like it would be a nice alternative to the carribean for a honeymoon distination that is not so resort focused. I'd love to hear restaurant recommendations or other tips frome anyone who has been.
In case you clicked on the title because you've never heard of Malta Island (I had not either) it's a small island situated between Italy and Africa. Recently, it was in the news as a stop over point for Americans evacuating Libya. It is part of the EU so the currency is EUR and while the locals speak Maltenese, English is also popular. The food is said to be Medeterrainean style and they claim to have the best pizza outside of Italy. From what I read, the beaches are not long stretches of white sand but I think the old buildings make up for that. I'll write an actual review after I get back in case anyone is interested.
