Based on conversations the boyfriend and I have had I’m pretty sure that, depending on employment/finances going as planned, we will be engaged in about a year or so. In a few months he’ll have better employment options, and he has said that as soon as he is financially able he is going to start saving for a ring. Yay!!!
The thing is I don’t think it’s fair that he is going to save up for this symbol of his love for me and I don’t have to do anything but accept it. I feel like he deserves something nice to show my love for him, too! Anyone else doing this?
I want to get him a really nice acoustic guitar. He’s been wanting to get one for himself for a while (he already has one but it’s crappy quality) and it’s something he can keep/enjoy for the rest of his life. Unfortunately, I knew that I wouldn’t be able to keep the secret for a year so I told him my plan. At first he was waaay against it (“That’s not how it works! You’re supposed to get stuff, not me!”) but he’s definitely warmed up to the idea. It’ll be pretty fun going ring and guitar shopping together

@babytoes: Yes…I opened a savings account for our wedding/house/kids. It’s a general ‘us’ account.
Huge thing with my SO is financial planning-he wants to save and pay for everything outright. He knows that I have an account and I’m saving–I’m hoping that by the time my SO proposes that I will almost have the wedding saved up for/paid for, which is highly likely because it’ll probably be a year or more before he proposes. When he proposes I plan to tell him how much $ I’ve had saved which I know he will value-but aside from some fancy scotch my SO doesn’t really like presents, he never has.
He’ll get access to our wedding account, fancy scotch, and probably a little of what @Artificial-Sweetener: suggested too!! haha!

@babytoes: I got my fiance an expensive bottle of scotch when we got engaged…. but I knew it was going to happen because we bought the ring together, and decided to take a weekend trip to a hot spring for the proposal…. so I figured it would be nice for one of us to have a surprise that weekend lol

@babytoes: my DH is a tech guy– I got us both iPad minis. Not my idea for us both to have them–“But who am I going to play electronic Battleship with!?!?!” But I do love my iPad mini lol

I’ll be going the watch route! i think it’s fun for him to have something to wear as an engagement piece! He has always wanted an Omega, i’ve got one on layaway at a jewellery store, i’ll have it paid off by the time i get my ring, and he can have it then!:)

We have actually had this conversation 🙂
He asked for a PS4 as an engagement present to him. He told me it would be a safe bet to just wrap it up and put it under the Christmad tree!!! We’ll see…

I caved and gave SO the PS4 yesterday when I really had purchased it for his mangagement / Christmas Gift! I’m such a loser, but I was just too excited and I couldn’t wait! Oh well at least I know the ring is coming, so I don’t feel too ridiculous 🙂 soo now I guess I need to find him something small to open on Christmas Day lol

I got my fiance an “ipad-gement ring.” I made the box the diamond and used cardboard to make a ring shape around it. I gave it to him a week or so after he proposed when we were on a weekend getaway. I agree – I thought he should get something too, and I knew it would really help him in school.
