So at the college I work at, we have a big fundraising auction that always has a theme, and most people come in costume. They just announced this year’s theme is Mardi Gras. I love costume parties and can usually come up with something creative, but I am totally drawing a blank with this one. I don’t really know anything about Mardi Gras. I like to make my husband dress up with me (yes – make 🙂 ), so if I could find something we could do as a couple, that would be the best. From googling, I’ve figured out that it’s all about flashy-ness, and the color theme is usually gold, green, purple, but I can’t think of anything creative!
Any ideas for me?!?

@Kayla0416: For me, for a new year’s masquerade ball, I had a friend of mine turn an old overcoat I got at a thrift store into a militaryesque, (sort of) regency-style tailcoat – we were actually planning to go to Mardi Gras in NO that year, for my 30th, but something expensive came up and we couldn’t go, but I was planning to wear that coat. Something like that – a flashy, colourful take on formalwear. There are also lots of Black Tie and White Tie events associated with Mardi Gras in New Orleans, so it plays into the theme. For you, you could do a ridiculous, over the top, ball gown, sort of thing, but, again, in outlandish colours, with garish amounts of sequins, etc. That’s all I’ve got right now.

Mardi Gras is an excuse to party here. The formal events that accompany it require full on ball gowns. In fact, most of the bridal stores here carry a larger than normal ‘bridesmaid’ section for Mardi Gras. Pretty much, buy a ball gown with lots of sequins, and if you really want, throw in a mask. (google mardi gras mask). Anthing full of bling and completely over the top will do it!
