Every year, my DH and I argue about Christmas lights. One of us likes white (“elegant”) lights, while the other insists on colorful (“nostalgic” – reminds them of their childhood) lights. We’ve deicded that one of us gets to pick the lights for the outside of the house, and the other gets the tree. But we both want the tree!! What to do! Neither of us wants to give in. 🙂 What do you like best? (Vote on the poll!)

Trade, every other year one of you gets the tree!

It depends on the type of lights you want to use! I’m all about those big, colorful, oversized bulbs outside, but I’m not a fan of multi-colored icicle lights.
It also depends on how you decorate your tree, though! If you’ve got a whole better homes & gardens, matching ornaments and pretty garland look going on, plain white light would look fantastic. If your ornament collection is like mine and is the accumulation of one ornament per year for your life, then your lights could be as colorful and ecclectic as the tree’s other decorations!

I voted white lights on tree colored lights on house….but really you should have blue lights! I like ble lights the best. My grandmother used to have a white tree with blue lights and ornaments…it was amazing.

howtobeawife: I can’t pick…so I said you need counselling! I would do white lights on the tree, colours on the house and get the little reflector thingys for the lights on the tree so they’re white but still colourful!
I do like the elegant fancy white light trees but it’s not what i grew up with and it’s not what DH grew up with either so our tree is a weird mishmash of everything which is how we like it.
I would say colour outside, white on the tree if I HAD to choose.

See,I don’t think white lights belong on the tree! Boring! But that’s just me, what do I know?!

White (or all one colour outside) and colourful on the tree. I remember my first year living alone. I was going to have a gorgeous tree, all coodinating ornaments and ribbon. I did. And it was beautiful. And I hated it! I missed the mismatched collection of ornaments that came from all over the world, given to me as gifts, the ones with special memories. So the next year I went back to a free-for-all tree and I love it.
We’re moving into our new house before Christmas. I want an understated look out front (nothing massive or inflatable.) And the tree we currently have will be decorated as usual. We’re getting another tree to have in the front area. That one will be all colour coordinated and lovely.
Best of both worlds? I also like the idea of switching every other year.

I grew up with white lights on my tree and colorful lights outside, so that is what we will do 🙂 luckly FI doesn’t really care about Christmas and has given the holiday decisions to me, which I’m very happy about lol.
I would definitely switch every year or just tell DH to suck up and do what you tell him 🙂

OMG we totally have this SAME FIGHT every year!!!! We decided that we alternate years. One year I get what I want and the next he gets what he wants.

Luckily both like white lights! And, live in a condo so no outside deocrating needed!
Play a game for it.. Screw the every other year business. Winner gets their choice.

FI is Jewish, so I win on all Christmas-related decisions (not that he has any actual opinion), BUT when I was growing up we always had 2 trees for this exact reason! In our family room, we had the “family” tree with all our dorky, handmade ornaments and colored lights, and in our living room, my mom had this beautifully decorated tree with white lights. A win/win for everyone!

Personally, I like my tree to have colorful lights and the outside of the house could go either way.

White lights on tree & can be decorated colorfully with ornaments 😉

I think my DH would have liked colored lights, but our house and tree is white lights because I bought it all before he came along MUAHAHA. Maybe we will have to recompromise when the tree breaks, but for now, I win.
Personally, I would rock paper sisers it for this year and then get lights that work both in and out doors and switch every year. 🙂
