At least with my insurance, the discount isn't for being married but is actually for having multiple cars on the policy. They couldn't put DH's and my cars on the same policy together until we were married (so we each had separate policies with one car each). After we got married, they were able to lump these policies together so we had one policy with 2+ cars which gave us a discount.
Maybe it's just my insurance because we already had both cars on there even though we weren't married & getting that discount. She specifically said our insurance was going down because we were married!
To be part of this bank you need to be affiliated with the military (have a spouse, dad, etc. in the bank or be a vet or in the military yourself).
I left Bank of America for them. Best. Decision. EVER.
We got marriage discounts with our insurance too - State Farm and Farmers. Depends on the company, but for ours it was a "responsibility" discount, like those you get when you hit 25 or 30 years old. I've heard some places give discounts when you have kids too. I think it's just the premise that as you get older and have more responsibilities, you supposedly drive more carefully?
We have OneBeacon Insurance, and we already had our house and two cars on the policy, so we got a discount. But after we got married, we got another discount of over $100 per year.
boo. I just got off the phone with our insurance agent - Travelers - and since we already have a discount for having auto & homeowners through them we can't get anything additional on top of that.
But if you only have one or the other you DO get a discount for being married!
Hm. Maybe it's time we relooked at who's providing our insurance!
@MerryC: Humm .... I have State Farm too and we get multi-car discounts and safe driver discounts and discounts as we get older and discounts for having both auto and renters with them but we didn't get any discounts specifically for getting married.
Our insurance lady told us that we won't get a discount because we'll both be 25 by the time we get married but if one of us hadn't been then we would've gotten a discount equivalent to the rate of 2-25+ year olds on the policy instead of 1-under 25 and 1-over 25. =)
@Gerbera: Ya maybe! I would look into it. $340 a year is definitely worth it!
@Mrs.KMM: and we're not married yet and our policies have been combined for over a year. We're both potential drivers on both vehicles and such.
@asunw: So the first question I asked after she told me that was "My husband turns 28 in 2 days, and I turn 29 in May, do we get another discount?" And the lady said "No, the marriage discount is as good as it gets." (I thought that was funny!)
Maybe it just depends on the company, then.
@deetroitwhat: lol, i don't know. Our insurance lady was just randomly telling my fiancee that we shold move our wedding up so we could get the discount earlier. ;)
@deetroitwhat: Well dang...DH and I are on usaa as well. I"m going to make sure he checks to see if we are getting a marriage discount. I've never heard of that either. I'll take whatever discount we can get!
With USAA do you have to bank with them to get insurance through them?
I LOVE our current bank and don't want to switch!
Oops, I might have mis-spoke. I had State Farm prior to getting married, and we combined everything to Farmers after the wedding. So I know Farmers gives us a married discount, I thought my State Farm agent said we would have too, but I could be wrong - sorry!
@asunw: We were also potential drivers on both vehicles prior to getting married but we couldn't get the multi-car discount until we were a legal, married unit.
@MerryC: I'm just repeating what one agent told us and that it was age related. You can get a 'marriage discount' but essentially its the same as the discount you get when you turn 25.
My sister who works for Allstate says that people who are married are usually less 'risk' than people are single. She also says that people who have the least risk are people who are married and are at least 25 years of age. So when you turn 25, your insurance will also drop... (this is all given that you are relatively a good driver.) Also, I know for Allstate, you get a discount for insuring multiple things like other cars, houses/apartment. You can get a discount if you are accident free for a year, if you don't have any claims and if you are a good student. I think there are other things you can get a discount on but that what I know off the top of my hand.
Yeah, let's just say I call my sister all the time for 'what if' questions.
@Gerbera: No you don't! I have car insurance with them and do my banking elsewhere. I've been really happy with the rates and service of the car insurance, though, and am thinking about moving some of our savings into a USAA account to try out their banking.
@Gerbera: We have travelers for both home and car, and we got a marriage discount.
@yrret107: In our case, we were both well over 25 and had the multi-car discount & renters insurance bundle and still got the 'marriage' discount.
@JsDragonfly: Definitely call!! Love USAA!
I don't get any discounts and I have Progressive. It is so expensive. I used to have the BEST insurance with State Farm- it was FULL coverage on a new car for $800 a year. It was great-
@cbee: I left Progressive for USAA. With Progressive, JUST me alone was $170. I switched to USAA and my insurance w/renters was $80. Progressive is a rip off. Why are you with them now?
I used to work at an Insurance Agency that represents several companies and can vouch that the discounts are different based on company. Specifically, the agency I worked at would requote your policy each year to acocunt for things like age discounts and marriage which vary from comapny to company. I can confirm that the marriage discount is based on increased responsibility and less risk. Also, if you are living together long term and are common law married if you tell your agent oyu are married you will also get the discount (they don't need to actually see the certificate of marriage) you just have to represent yourself as married.
We were on the same car insurance policy before we got married. I didn't get around to changing my name on the policy until about 6 months after the wedding and I wish I had done it sooner! We ended up saving an additional $1,200 a year!
The fiance and I have progressive, but we've been wanting to switch to USAA. My future mother in law is the one that got my fiance into the USAA bank, but they said since she doesn't have the insurance we can't get it.
We've been trying to convince her to switch her's over so we can switch ours over. Maybe I'll send her this link and hint at that's what she can get us for a wedding present. I would love to save more money and then get the marriage discount on top of that... Sign me up! Thanks for this info. I had no idea either.
Our State Farm gave us a marriage discount. I think it's state-to-state. I once heard that they figure: a married couple are statistically safer drivers because they have more to live for/they are more responsible than a single guy and gal. Your guy's car insurance will probably go down more if/when you decide to have kids too -- Guys with kids are much less a risk as well.
OK. Def will get a quote from USAA (BIL & his wife are both in the AF) then. We're def going to shop around for new rates now just to see. No harm.
What??? I don't get why we didn't it then??
Maybe it's a state thing or maybe we already got the age discount. Are you under 25??
I have USAA for banking and insurance, and I love them. They give great customer service, tell me when someone has stolen my credit card and fix everything for me, rebate my ATM fees so I can use any ATM, and were fantastic when I needed to make a claim.
@slicey19: Please be careful re relying on common law marriage. Very few states actually have these laws nowadays. If you claimed to be married, weren't (because you didn't meet the standard for common law marriage or your state doesn't have it) and then needed to make a claim you might have issues. Often if you are planning to get married, then you are not considered common law married. You frequently need to 1) hold your self out as married and 2) consider yourself married. (If you are planning to get married later, you fail #2.) Please talk to a lawyer about laws in your state...
Crazy never knew they gave discounts for being married... gonna have to check into that...
@kay01: sorry, didn't mean to mislead. In my state common law marriage is defined as living together for either 7 or 9 + years and representing yourself as married. I assumed the term common law would indicate that you need to meet these legal requirements and that people in such a situation would know if it applies to them. In my experience, there were couples living together for 10+ years who missed out on the discount because they didn't realize they qualified. I am by no means encouraging insurance fraud.
@deetroitwhat: they don't require that anymore for just banking, but they do require being military or being grandfathered in for deposit anywhere and for credit cards.
We got a discount on car insurance (thank you USAA) but nothing else.

Ok, call me naive, whatever you want (I feel like a big idiot) but I called my insurance company the other day to put my new apt complex as interest guarantor or something like that (I'm probably way off) and they asked "Will S.A.R. be coming with you?"
I responded "Yes, we're married now." And the lady said "Oh! Well you get a discount on your car insurance too!"
She did her number crunching at she said ok, your total is "One-seven-one..."
And I was all "A HUNDRED AND SEVENTY ONE DOLLARS???????????"
She started to a laugh.
I? Had NO IDEA that you got a discount like that for being married. She told me she knew 19 year old's that got married for that reason!
I must be totally in the dark... I knew my husband could be on my insurance and all that, but I didn't know we got a break other than our general taxes.
Is there anything else I am missing??
