You have to go back and pick it up later -- 2 days, I think, but you can have someone else pick it up. We got married in Philly, but don't live there, so we were able to apply for the license on a Thursday, stay for the weekend and leave, and my MIL picked up the marriage license on Monday.
We got ours right away? There was still a 3-day waiting period until we could actually get married, but nothing had to be mailed to us. We got our license in Delaware County/Media, if that makes any difference.
julie's right. we dont' live in PA, we live in NY, but we are getting married in Erie County where my parents live. My fiance and i went and applied and my mom picked it up the next week. (we went friday and it was ready on monday)

just an update...we went into city hall in philadelphia and attained the self uniting license the same day. we actually had an issue in bucks county and were denied a self uniting license b/c we did not have a letter from the Quaker church stating we were members. according to a ruling last year, supposedly that is not the case anymore.
anyway, the end result was that we got it the same day!
we got ours in Mont Co, no problems, went in, gave our info, swore we weren't related and left with the marriage license
also, Mont Co was $45 where as the website for Bucks said it was $60
I don't know how it is for other counties, but we got our license in Centre City Philadelphia at City Hall and it was good for anywhere in PA. We got it the same day we applied for it, but we weren't "allowed" to get married for 3 days after getting. Also, at City Hall, it cost us $80! Our license was the most expensive that I have heard of, but at the time, we thought they all cost that much. :( It is a kind of fancy one, though, with little drawings in the background of the Liberty Bell, City Hall, Betsey Ross, etc. Still, the design wasn't worth the extra money.

when you apply for a marriage license in PA, do you get it the same day or do you have to go back and pick it up?
