Is there anything that you wish you'd registered for now that you're married?  I've got the basics on the registry and upgrades for towels and servingware, but could still add about 30 more items, with the number of showers that people are throwing.  Eeeeeek!

I registered for sheets because we needed them but thinking about it now, I wished I'd put some more smaller  kitchen items on the registry. I don't know if they would've been purchased but I see the sheets and I'm like...  that could have been an avocado cuber!

Depends what you mean by china. Like, everyday dishes, ABSOLUTELY. I use mine constantly. Fine china, eh, not so much. I doubt I'd ever use it, and I prefer function over beauty.

@Miss Orchard:  I know, right???  I was wondering if anyone thinks it would be a good investment.  I'm not currently registered for any and I don't think we have the space for it!

@mittens111211:  I'm going to go nuts now and look at all the cute little gadgets.  Our vegetable peeler sucks.

I wish I would have registered for everyday dishes and some really nice pots and pans. Also, I would have put a Dyson on there bc I'm pretty sure my mom would have bought if for us.

China was one of the things I wanted the most lol. I am weird.

I just wish we had registered for more!! Our registry was completely bought out after our two showers (and I thought we had a pretty good sized registry...) and now we have to emergency register for more things before the wedding. I got everything I wanted and more (and probably a bunch of stuff we do not need lol)

I only wish we'd registered for less kitchen stuff. We got mainly things for our kitchen, which is great, but we ended up with a lot of misc. things we didn't need as much as other things (like bathroom towels and bedding). I think most people tend to buy kitchen things off registries, and I wish we hadn't put so many kitchen options.

For ym first wedding, we registered for china. It was important to me, and I'm glad I have it. I'm always confused why brides don't want china (unless they are inheriting a beautiful patter, and soon). I mean, what are you going to serve Thanksgiving dinner on? Christmas? Lovely dinner dates in with the Hubs? China is the one gift from your wedding you will probably legitimately keep for your entire life. Can you say that about towels or sheets or even a KitchenAid stand mixer?

@brenda.m.fields:   i know families (married 20+) that have never ever used their china.  They are a huge pain to wash and to wrap up and put away and take out.   Therefore, we didn't register for china and are so glad we didn't.  Instead we put a really nice $80.00 full 12 person dinnerware set on the registry and will use that for all nicer parties, holidays, or events we host.

@KateByDesign:  I feel from experience that a "huge pain" is an exaggeration. I also find it hard to believe your $80 for 12 set is "really nice" in any kind of way that would compete with china. If you prefer something less formal and that's your style, then that's your style and that is what you want, but you aren't really providing dinnerware for your parties that matches the dignity of fine china. It's "really nice" for everyday. Let's not pretend that everyday is anything other than everyday. I love my everyday, but it is nothing compared to my china. For my personal style, I would hate to serve a formal dinner to my guests of future children on the same plates we eat tomato sandwiches on.

My guests don't care what they're eating on, only the company.  They're not the kind of people to notice trivial stuff like that - thank god.

Listen - if you want china, then put it on your registry.  All I was saying is that a lot of people I know regret registering for it.

@brenda.m.fields:  Dang, it is just a plate! Of course this is coming from the girl who's family eats off plastic plates at holidays. I honestly can't think of a soul who would really pay THAT much attention to what plates they are eatting off.

Anyway, I would have put more kitchen rags/towels on ours, and fun serving pieces like for chips/dip, snack food type stuff.

Not everyone uses formal china, even for more special occasions. There's no one correct way to serve a holiday meal or dinner date.

That's why we have registries, so each couple can ask for the items that work best for THEM :)

    Great to hear everyone's suggestions!

Sometimes I wish we would have put luggage on our registry. I am realizing while packing how old our stuff is!

Also, we didn't have a coffee maker or Keurig on our registry originally, but ILs bought us one for Christmas. Our Keurig is AWESOME. I'm glad we got it, despite not registering for it.

I'm doing China.  My mother and grandmother use theirs.  I'm getting classic China that I could blend my everyday with in case we have more guests.  I like the idea of having occasions where you dress things up a bit!  We've always used it for holidays and special occasions...it's neat to see the China and know there is a big event to celebrate!  Different strokes for different folks and I think it definitely depends on what your family did!  Certainly not anything to argue over!

@brenda.m.fields:  I can honestly say that I'd probably never use china, crystal, or silver. I like my dishwasher, thanks! FH and I are also of the opinion that most of it is either A. ugly or B. boring, and C. overpriced! We are getting simple, but nice-looking, "everyday" place settings, glassware, and silverware, and we're buying some matching servingware, and painting some ourselves at a pottery studio. I think that people will notice that more than a gold-edged white plate with a hideous lace pattern that makes a special "china" tinkling noise when you hit it with your fork.

We are also "inheriting" china from my FMIL. And we both hate it. It's going to Goodwill as soon as it's in our posession (and yes, she knows; she just doesn't want it in her house because at this point it's just clutter).

And when I cook for holidays, I cook for 1-2 days. : ) But it's the food that's important, and I don't want to be cleaning up for 3 extra hours because I have to wash everything by hand!

@pineapplelove:  I agree. I was taken aback by the attitude though that someone would claim that an everyday boxed set competes with china. They are different and serve different functions. Know your style and go with it. No one I know would be offended if I didn't serve them on china, but I would be embarassed to do it. If I prepare a meal that took me all day to make (I take my cooking seriously), I want to dishes I serve it on to reflect that. I think serving a nice meal on everyday is like wearing a sun dress to a formal wedding.

I have a lot of friends in their 30s who didn't register for china and are know buying it out of pocket, and my step mom did that before she and my Dad got married because she thought at the point that she would never get married and wanted nice dinnerware. Wedding gifts are an opportunity to invest in things that you wouldn't buy yourself and that you will have for a long time.

My fi and i were already living together so we didnt need your basic starting out kitchen stuff. The only thing i would of liked to have put on it was bedding, dining room table cloth and a clothes steamer. However, i hadnt seen at bedding set or table cloth that  i had liked at that time.

We did also put some Vera Wang fine china as we didnt have that. That was my one must putting my registry together. I'm glad we did that as it is nice to have for those special occasions.   But honestly, we haven't used it yet but will be having company soon so I'm excited to use it!  In hindsight though, im glad i didnt put every piece (sugar bowl, creamers, coffee pot , salt and pepper etc) on it.  I would concentrate on the place settings and the pieces that are most important to you.  For us we wanted the gravy boat and teapot as we are big tea drinkers. I figured the coffee pot we wouldn't use all the much as we have a tassimo. For the other pieces I decided I could purchase later if I wish we had them.  Plus I have some nice plain white creamer/sugar bowl etc that would mix okay with it.  I agree with other bees that this is nice to have and a nice keepsake from your wedding.

We also needed some bathroom accessories as our house is a year old and still needed to decorate our spare bathrooms. So this is a perfect time to get your house decorated so don't forget about that! The items we really needed were bigger ticketed items like bedroom furniture, new kitchen dining set so getting gift certificates and money helped alot. I was glad we registered at a store like the bay where you can buy your bigger ticketed items as we received around 1500 in gift certificates from there. I wanted to use it towards something we really needed and bought a new king size mattress with it.  I'm not sure what we would of done if the gc were at a store that only sells china,  bedding or linens.  Also remember if anything needs to go back you most likely will only have a gift receipt so the store will only give you a credit not cash!

Personally I haven't a clue how a box set does or doesnt compete with china, as i dont have much experience entertaining. That's great that you get enjoyment out of your formal dishes, also great if someone gets enjoyment out of other options. As MilksMom said, certainly nothing to argue over!

Crate and Barrel has really nice place settings that appear as nice as China but are more reasonable ($80) and low maintenance which I think would be a great alternative if you have a hard time justifying!

You were take "aback" (you were offended by MY choice?) by my "attitude" (you mean personal opinion? where was attitude in that?) and claim (nope, never claimed anything.  again, my personal opinion and choice).

You initially asked, "I mean, what are you going to serve Thanksgiving dinner on? Christmas? Lovely dinner dates in with the Hubs?"  I was answering that my $80 (ah! gasp) set will do just fine.  Me.  Personally. I was in no way comparing it to china.  How you responded was very snooty.  And how you continue to.

If you would be embarrassed to serve your nice meal on every day dinnerware I think that's something best kept to yourself, as a lot of us here don't have the option to register for these kind of things as we need other things instead.

Do your thing and I'll do mine.  You don't have to berate people because it's a luxury you're priviliged to have.

To add to the china debate-

We decided that we did want china, but I had one requirement, that I knew if we didn't fulfill then we would never use it. The china had to be dishwasherable. So, we got a lovely but not-too-fancy set, for $50 a place setting, and we determined to use it *whenever* we have *anyone* over. And we do. :-)

But, I do have several friends who've been married for a year or so, and they say they haven't used their china...but I don't know why they don't just pull it out and use it! So, really, only you know yourself.

Also, one thing that helps us to use it more, is that for our "everyday" dishes, we actually have 4 of one kind and 6 of another kind so there's not a big set that matches, and they really aren't nice at all, like what we would want anyone else to see, haha. So, of course that inspires us to use our china more!

Wow the China debate is heated- we're not married yet but registered for nice everyday china from Crate and Barrel. For us it will be perfect. We also registered for a Miele vacuum (better than Dyson if you have allergies) luggage, an imulsion blender, of course a kitchen aid mixer and lots of small kitchen things and bedroom things. I think we have a good mix in there.

Holy china debate! Personally, I love china, and am glad I have my grandmother's heirloom china, so I don't have to register for most of the set...but I did add a few servers, chargers, and fine silverware to make it more current.

I think the variety and sheer amount of things available for a registry really lets each couples personality and style come out—just like all of our weddings are so different, so are our registries. I like looking at my friends registries because I fell like I can get a better sense of what their married lives are going to be like!

@joy2011 I just added an emersion blender to ours thanks to your recommendation—thanks!

Having just registered, I would like to point out that most fine china these days is dishwasher-safe. Many are not microwave-safe because they have metal edging or designs. I told the Macy's consultant that I would not consider any patterns that were not dishwasher-safe, and my selection was not significantly limited by this requirement.

On another note, what is special about an immersion blender? What makes this different/better than a regular blender or food processor? Maybe I need to add one to my list!
