Hi Bees, I have a timing question about name changes. I’m planning on take my FH’s last name, but not sure what the best timing for completing the name change is given my timeline.
We’re planning on doing a city hall marriage, just the two of us, very soon. So, legally, I can take his name right after. However, no one really know about this except our parents, we’re doing it just for us, and I don’t want to start using my new last name until after we have the religious ceremony/reception in September. We’re planning on travelling for our honeymoon in late November.
When should I start the name change process? Is there a time period that’s too long (ie would doing it 6 months after the legal marriage be too long)? If I start the process in late September, is that enough time to get my new passport for traveling? If we book a flight now and I change my name before the trip, is there a way to fix it?
Just need some advice from someone who has gone through the process! Thanks!

@futurefishy: We were married in September, and I started my name change process on Valentine’s Day of the following year. 🙂 I don’t think I was quite ready to part with my name yet, long story short. Haha! To be honest, I don’t think I ever really quite finished my name change on all of my documents, and I just submitted for my passport change like…3 weeks ago! Clearly, I’m very slow at the process and we were married in 2011!
As for changing your name in Sept for a Nov honeymoon, sounds like it should be okay. Passport turnaround looks like it’s about 4-5 weeks. But I’m still waiting for mine, so stay tuned! 🙂

If you get on the passport paper work right away, it should be ok. They say it takes 4-6 weeks. I got mine with in 2-3 weeks. There’s no way to change a name on a flight as far as I know, or at least without a fee.
ETA: All you need to change your passport is to change your name with social secuirty. You can do that right away after you’re legally married and not change anything else or start using it yet. I didn’t change my license until 1.5 years later, and only because we bought a new car and the insurance company was being a pain cause the name I was insured under didnt match my license name.

Thanks for the responses! I’m also guessing I should book flights under my new name since I’ve heard it’s pretty much impossible to change airline tickets.

@futurefishy: With travel coming up in November, I’d either
1) leave my name as is for all ticket/passport stuff and change it after all travel is done for a while. I didn’t change mine for 6 months after marriage and I do not recall any time limit.
2) change it now when you get married, but no reason you’d have to advertise that!
PS – if you have a passport now that is fairly new, you can change the name for free if it’s within a certain age (a year maybe?).

hmmm i would def. change my name before then if you are planning on getting a passport. mine took a couple months. my BIL’s took more than a couple. he just got his this year and he seemed much harder then it was a few years ago. i got my SS card right after and it took a week to get sent to me. we got married out of our town in the capital so i could walk up to the SS office. but it will take even longer if you have to send all your info out instead. then you can get your passport. and later , right after the wedding, get your new drivers license. you dont even have to tell anyone.
I did the same thing. we got married a year before and didnt want to tell anyone. i didnt want to change or start counting our wedding years till our religious ceremony. we are not leaving untill this winter so i had a lot of time.
as far as the airlines go i would call and ask them how much of a deal it is to change your name if you want the tickets before.
