I’ve noticed that a lot of my married friends on Facebook use both their maiden and married names on their profile, when they don’t use their maiden name in any other context.
For example, my legal name (on my Social Security card) is Myfirst Mymiddle Hislast. I go by Myfirst Hislast. But my Facebook profile name is Myfirst Mymaiden Hislast so that people who knew me before I was married recognize me.
I’m just wondering how most of you do this? If you took your husband’s last name and dropped your maiden name entirely, are there still places where you use it, even though it’s no longer your legal name?
PS – I’ve also noticed a lot of women I know hyphenating their names on Facebook when they don’t do so in real life. They list their name as Jane Smith-Jones on Facebook, when in real life their name is Jane Smith Jones or even Jane Anne Jones and they have never hyphenated. Why the sudden appearance of the hyphen on Facebook?

I just changed my last name completely. My profile picture is of me, so if someone gets a little confused by the name change, hopefully they will still recognize my picture!

I think people do it so old friends can easily search for them. I have friends who have doen that, too.

My legal name is Myfirst Mymaiden Hislast. My facebook profile shows Myfirst Hislast and in parentheses it shows Myfirst Mymaiden, in case anyone gets confused.
ETA: If someone were to search Myfirst Mymaiden, my profile would pop up. It also pops up when you search my actual name. This is a setting available on facebook.

Mine shows Myfirst Mymaiden Hislast name so that anyone who knew me before could look me up on facebook. Outside of facebook, I go by Myfirst Hislast.

I forgot about the alternate name option in parenthesis. I don’t see that used very often though. Not sure why.
Any other places you find yourself using your maiden name even when you’ve officially dropped it? I really don’t use it much….I miss it sometimes.

I have my name as Myfirst Hislast, and then Myfirst Mymaidenlast in parenthesis.
Right now I’m in the legal name grey zone. I haven’t officially changed it yet, I can’t get an email address with Myfirst Hislast for the life of me, but I changed my email signature to reflect my married name. I feel very confused as to what name to give because if they check my ID it wouldn’t match the name I give. Ack!!! I have to practice my new signature and just make the change!!!

I changed my name to Myname Hislastname (mymaidenname) – facebook actually gives you the option to do this. So people can still search for you by your maiden name!

I took his last name and dropped my maiden… but on facebook I have both.
I know a few friends who dropped their maiden name and I would look on my news feed and think “WTH is that?!?” I almost unfriended them. So because of that, I kept my maiden name on facebook.
I did do the parantheses thing but my married name would only show up on the news feed. The parentheses name only show up when you click on your profile, I think.
