Are there any married bees who did their own makeup who have their pro pics back and would like to share? I keep hearing that a bride 'JUST HAS TO" get her makeup done professionally or else your makeup will not look good in professional photos. Thank you!
I don't quite see why doing your own make-up instead of having a 'professional' do it would not look good on professional photos. If you know how to do your make-up well, and it looks good, it will look good on pics as well. A professional visagist in the end does the same as what you will do yourself: put on make-up. If you are comfortable enough to do it yourself, I'd say go for it. I never use a whole lot of make up and it always takes me forever to put it on which is why I will have someone else do it on my wedding day. But that's cause I want to be sure that it looks good.. not cause i worry it otherwise wouldn't be any good on my pics. :)
I did! I had 3 makeup trials and it turned out I just wasted so much money. They made me look old! I was a 40 year old bride and wanted to look great. The makeup artists basically just applied makeup the way they did every other bride, and that was not me! So glad I backed out of my contract before the wedding.

I watched a lot of You Tube videos to learn how to do my eyes for the big day!
I did my own makeup and hair....I went to the MAC counter and had a consultation/teaching session and bought some products. I don't have all the pics back, but I have a few from the sneak peak.

I also watched a few youtube videos about applying makeup.
My sister did mine. She likes doing makeup, I like the way she does make up and trust her to know my style more than anyone else. So that was her wedding gift and it worked out great. She used mainly bare minerals on my face and I thought it looked good in pictures.
Hi! I did my own makeup, just like I do it every day but with a little more on the eyes, and my pics were fine. I found that the people i went to tended to be very heavy handed and I looked like I was wearing a mask and the color looked weird when using a flash in trial photos. But when I did my own, it matched my skin tone perfectly because it's what I always use.
I can see the pros and cons of both, but I would say that good advice is that if you do your own makeup regularly and do it well, then you can pull it off. If you aren't a makeup wearer and don't know where to start, have someone else do it. But I wouldn't necessarily say that someone else must be a pro. A lot of those makeup people in the mall have no experience other than playing on women's faces right there in the mall - and some gave me some pretty ghastly makeovers!
This is a great post. I'm thinking of doing my own makeup too and its nice to see all the advice!
Thank you everyone! LadyJenn: So nice to see another 40ish bride (and you look fantastic!). I've been doing my own makeup since I was 16 (now 43) and at first I was just going to do it myself but then I started to hear from others that you really do need to have a professional do it. For the past few weeks I've been emailing/calling make up artists and NOT ONE of them have returned my call or email. I'm now starting to rethink hiring someone and figured heck I've been doing my makeup for years now, why would I want someone else to do it for that one important day and make me look/feel different then I'm used to. How different really can a professional camera be from digital cameras these days that would make you look horrid if you did your own makeup? So thank you everyone for the feedback!!
I did my own makeup, and it turned out WAY better than either of the makeup trials I had with pros. I was fed up with the bad trials, went to sephora and had a free trial there. I bought the makeup they recommended and did my makeup myself on the wedding day. I was happy with how it turned out and I highly recommend doing it yourself!

also - if you wanted to see what I looked like when I paid to have a pro do my makeup for a trial, go here http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/makeup-looks-weird
what a disaster that was! Doing it myself was much better!
I did my own and it turned out well, especially as I don't wear much make up on a daily basis. Here is a pic from my wedding. The offical pro pics aren't back but this was taken with a similar camera and at the end of our cocktail hour.
What a great thread!! All you ladies looked FAB on your day, and more power too ya for making YOURSELF look that way! You're inspiring me to do my own makeup!
I did my own makeup! I did a 'trial run' the week before, shown, a few fake eyelashes and all. One picture is from the self-trial and then from the wedding day so you can see how different a pro camera makes you look anyways!
woah those are huge, sorry! but i'm glad i just ended up doing my own makeup. i did get the airbrush foundation done, but i did all the rest myself which saved me some money for sure!
i did my own, and aside from the fact that i forgot to use waterproof, i thought i looked pretty good.

@Ladyjenn: I also had make-up trials and they made me look older, not good for a 50 year old bride. One simply can not heap a ton of make-up on skin like mine and look good. So I did my own make-up.
Amariem25: Your right, your makeup looked so much better when you did it yourself!
scg00387: Thank you for showing us the compare and contrast between your trial run and the pro pic. It makes me believe more that you can still look beautiful in professional pictures even when you do your own makeup!
Thank you everyone for taking the time to show pics..you have all convinced me to do my own makeup! So thank you
I plan on doing my own makeup for the most part. I might get some eyelashes put on by someone else but i dont really like how i look getting my makeup done. It looks to "done" and not me!
I'd love to see more pictures! I'm leaning towards DIY but feel pushed to get a makeup artist.
I did mine! I'm really picky about my makeup, and have never been able to find anyone who does it "quite right".
All of you ladies did wonderful jobs with your makeup!
I will also be doing my own because 1) I'm very picky about my makeup and 2) I'm getting married in Mexico and I'm not familiar with MUA's in that area.
I plan on having a couple of trials with my MUA at MAC here and just buying the products she suggests. I'm very confident about my decision.
I did my own makeup (with the help of my MOH) because I was really worried that having someone else do it would make me look not like me.

I so wanted to be pampered and look extra good, and thought only a professional could do that on my wedding day. I was very dissapointed that I had to take on the task myself, but it was the only solution! So glad I did it.
I did my own make up! I spent some time at Sephora, picking the brains of the MUA's there, then bought some nice stuff, practiced with it, and it went fine.
It was pretty fun, actually - on the morning of the wedding, there were 5 girls stuffed into the bathroom, and I was nervous about getting it right, so I made them all give me their opinions on whether or not I was doing it right. It turned into make-up by committee, even if I was the one holding the brush.
In the end, I'm really glad that I did my own make up because I ended up with some nice products, and I feel confident applying make up now, which I never have before. (I've always been the girl who dabbed on some powder for special occasions and wondered why I looked so bad in pictures.)

I know that even if I get a professional for the day, I would most likely still "fill in the blanks" with my own makeup because I am so used to doing my own, and like you said Katrinab, I'm worried about someone else making me look not like me.
@GraySquirrelsBest
No problem! I didn't regret the decision one bit. The more makeup I put on my face, the clown-ier I look. Of all the makeup testing I've done, and had done when a bridesmaid, people who are selling make up are used to using more and more products because more products used = more products sold = more $. Best of luck to you- there are tons of great makeup reviews on the internet, including on the WB forums!
I wanted to comment so many of these posts but I couldn't stop reading and looking at the pictures so by the time I got to the end I decided to just say THANKS to all of you for sharing. Absolutely beautifully done and I have decided to do my own makeup. I decided it because of this post and I am very excited about it! I'm going to set up a "test" with Mac and if I like it, I will buy their products and do it myself. Yay for us women who can take care of ourselves. ;)
I did my own. I had a free trial at Sephora and I couldn't stand how much blush she put on me - I'm fair-skinned and I think I look over-blushed pretty easily. Plus, the woman at Sephora insisted that I buy makeup two shades too dark since it was April and I was getting married in June and I'd have a tan by then. I returned the foundation and bought some from a Clinique counter the week before - in the fairest shade they make! I. Do. Not. Tan!
Anyhoo, I had pretty much NO time at all to do my makeup (running late!) and I'm still happy with how I look in pictures. :)

I did my own makeup, and I was really happy with how it came out. I also didn't wash it off that night, and the next morning it hadn't budged!
I did a lot of research and practiced, and it was no problem. I would do the same if I had to do it over again.
@katrinab:I love your pictures! You look gorgeous and your photographer is obviously fantastic.
I feel SO much more confident about doing my own make up now. Thank you married bees - you all look stunning!!!!
I normally wear a mineral foundation that is light and looked ok in pictures. About 3 weeks before the wedding, I went to the Clinique counter and tried out a full coverage foundation to go below my normal mineral foundation as well as try some new eye shadow. It was actually a lot of fun! I spent less getting some good products that I still use than I would have if I had hired a professional for one day.
Okay, so another question...
For those of you who did your own makeup and loved it, did you use foundation and/or airbrush makeup? If so, did you think it was necessary?
I never wear makeup on my face (besides under-eye concealer) and I am really scared about looking too "cakey" on my wedding day. I know it looks better in photos, but I want to look good (and real!) in person on my wedding day, too!
Does anyone have any advice?
@phatkat811: Ha! I am also really fair and heard the same thing from a makeup artist. I could not convince this lady that I NEVER, ever, ever tan! I walked out of the store without buying anything because she was so pushy. Glad you stuck to your guns.
I had a bad trial experience and you ladies are inspiring me! I may well do my own makeup!! Thank you all so much for sharing your beautiful pics and words of encouragement.
I did my own make up! I thought it turned out pretty good! Some helpful hints from the 'bee really helped me out a lot. Here's some pro pics:
