We paid $500 up front to hold the home. The money was later refunded to us.

We are going through this process now-  we’re using Veteran’s United and expect to pay no more than $2,000 in the NYC metro area.

@Bunny_the_Bride:  No problem! There were no other up front costs. (ETA: I just thought of this – we did have to pay $150 for a home inspection). We bought through the same realtor that was selling the house, so maybe that had something do with it? I don’t think so, though. We went through a local bank near a military post. We were going to use USAA but the local bank undercut their interest rate and fees.

@Bunny_the_Bride:  I didn’t use a VA loan but another 100% financing option and I had to put $1,000 down as earnest money and got the seller to pay the closing costs, so really…. I bought my condo for $1,000 out of pocket.
