Has anyone tried putting together a wedding cake like the attached picture, from the cover of the winter issue of Martha Stewart Weddings? I reeeeally would love to have a cake like this, but with all purple butterflies. I bought a bunch from Clear Cut Crafts and they are fantastic, but I'm not sure how they'll look on a cake since they're not paper or feathers. One way or another, I'll use those, but I'm not sure if there's a better supplier of butterflies for the cake. The site that's listed in the magazine is difficult to navigate, so I've given up on it for now.

Anyone have any advice, or if you've done this cake, do you have pictures?

    Thanks!

Ooooo I love the butterflies from clearcutcrafts! I'm sure the would work fine! are you worried of them being too translucent? Did you get the purple mix? why not do a trial. it'll be lovely!! i'm so excited to see ,  I loved this cake!

Yes! I got 3 dozen of the purple mix. We're not going to have a huge wedding, so I'm thinking a smaller version of the cake, 2 or 3 tiers. That is my big fear, that they'll be too transulcent, though I suppose they should be ok since the backdrop will be a white cake. A trial is a good idea, thanks! I may need to go back and order some more butterflies before I'm done, haha.

Here's a site I found (it is UK-based) that has a lot of different colored butterflies you could use http://www.wedding-favours.com/Butterfly%20Decorations%20for%20Weddings.htm.

LOL @beesknees I keep staring at the cover of the magazine. I'm thisclose to hanging it up on my wall so I can see it all the time!

So I had another thought about this... dunno if it will work, but has anyone ever seen little fake butterflies in local craft stores? I'm still early in the planning process so I haven't been out shopping much yet, but I wonder if I'll only find them online. I'm going to try and look in the next couple of weeks and if I find any good sources, I'll share!

    Hi JeanL1984,

It is LadyCCC from Clearcutcrafts here. I hope your purple butterflies worked out well on the cake. I didn't design the butterflies for weddings at first but now it is my biggest client base. Since Martha Stewart put those butterflies on her cover life has become very busy. People have pinned them, Stuck them and added them to flowers and ribbons on wedding cakes.

I hope they turn out well for you and if I can help you at all further or anyone else please drop me a line.

Those would look lovely on your wedding cake!!

I'd really suggest avoiding the sparkly ones though. A customer gave me some sparkly butterflies (upon delivery of course!) to put in the flower arrangement on the cake topper... what a disaster. I warned her, but she insisted on using them-- SPARKLES WENT EVERYWHERE! She didn't mind, but if you plan on eating your cake: avoid sparkles (unless properly sealed).

@LadyCCC Thanks! They look great and the wedding is still far off, but I'm excited to see how they look. Your pictures were helpful - I've got an even better idea of how they'll turn out.

@RecessionistaBride omg, yeah, I don't want to eat glitter. I'll probably use some sparkly butterflies elsewhere, but not on the cake!

Sorry, I didn't realize the link was broken! Try http://clearcutcrafts.com

Their prices aren't too bad - hopefully you can get a good price on these and get the colorful cake you want!

@Richardsgirl...the article that features the cake is actually about budget cakes if I'm not mistaken. The butterflies are just cheap crafting butterflies on a plain cake. Simple and so pretty!

oh wow, i haven't tried those so I can't say, but they look to be similar in quality. The ones from clear cut crafts did ship pretty quickly for overseas, but I can't remember exactly how long.

I am actually having this cake at my bridal shower. We are just ordering a plain two-three tier square or circle cake & placing butterflies on it. Dont think its that gard. I have found butterflies all over the internet and stuff - but have yet to decide if i want all white or mutli color to match my bridal shower color scheme. That white cake with various tiers & only two butterflies might also be a safer way to go

Here is an update to a couple more attempts at the butterfly cakes. One was done for the centrepiece at the Bridal show held in perth Western Australia.  The other is Black monarchs on a black floss ribbon cake. The black and white wedding theme is really popular like the Martha Cakes.

So I have spent weeks looking for butterflies for my cake.  I wanted to do something very similar to the Martha Stewart cake but in one color.  Apparently that made it alot harder!  I am doing all yellow and have had a miserable time finding them.  I just stumbled on a website that has EVERYTHING I want!  I'm bummed that I had already ordered some from other websites but I wanted to share it with all of you ladies so you may not have to look as hard as me!

    www.floralsupply.com

Just search for butterflies and it gives you about 25 pages of them!!!

This is just a few of what they have.  I might have to do this for my cake!  LOVE IT!

I made a Martha Stewart Weddings inspired butterfly cake for my wedding last May. It came out perfectly and was one of my favorite parts of the wedding. I have a photostream on flickr that shows my DIY cake baking practice process. I have also been blogging about the process and would love love love to share any insights or resources I have! Wedding planning was so much fun, and I enjoyed every aspect of pulling off a DIY, budget wedding. Incidentally, FloralTrims.com is having a butterfly and bird sale right now.

Below is a picture of my wedding cake:

Wasn't that just the most amazing cake?! I absolutely loved it and did one for my wedding last May. Instead of the rainbow theme, I did the butterflies in colors that coordinated with my wedding colors (sapphire and silver). Small wedding so a small cake (and on a super tight budget--only $250!) Got so many compliments. You'll love yours! Best of luck!
