Yay! Go Doug Gansler! Congrats to people who are now legally married in Maryland!
Awesome. So people can get married in Iowa, have their marriage recognized in the nation's capital, and can even drive into one of the two bordering states without worrying about their rights being ignored. That is awesome.
ugh. i suppose it is a step in the right direction, but i hate that we have to get thrilled about that. once the gov't everywhere takes the sticks out of their asses i'll truly be thrilled.
congrats to all the newly recognized couples in Maryland! hopefully the state will take the next step sooner rather than later.
Step by step by step. It's great news and worth celebrating for sure.
Yeah, my wife and I joke that it's nice not to suddenly become single as we drive over the border between DC and Maryland.
Glad that they're making a step in the right direction! Hopefully more places will follow (and legalize!) I also hate that this is what we have to be excited by, but at least it means change is happening.
I'll comment: I believe this is one of many very positive steps for the civil rights of LGBTQ couples!
Fantastic! Not enough, of course (come on New York!), but hopefully we are getting there.
Awesome!!! I was so hoping this would pass, I need to tell my gay friends to go somewhere else to get married now
honestly, i think it's dumb that they recognize it elsewhere, but they won't do it. if you're willing to recognize it you should be willing to do it.
although i agree, this is exciting for those in maryland who now have a way to get recognized.
ceamoste, I think the person who wrote that opinion would agree with you. What really happened is that Maryland was one of the first states to adopt a law against same-sex marriage, so there wasn't yet experience with how to make such a law air-tight. So it specifically bans the performance of same-sex marriages in Maryland. However, the language was not broad enough to cover same-sex marriages performed elsewhere. Since the opinion he was asked for only dealt with what current Maryland law would allow, he just said that this was the result under current law.
I think pretty much everyone realizes that this is a silly result. My hope is that after a few years, the Maryland legislature will realize it is silly to lose all the wedding dollars by making couples go elsewhere to get married, when their marriages will be recognized by Maryland in the end anyway.
its a really good step in the right direction!
now come on california, lets take it one step further and allow same-sex marriage (i was living out of state for school when prop 8 passed, although i did vote by mail, and i was so devastated to find out it passed...)

Story is here. A same-sex wedding still can't take place in MD, but apparently Maryland will now recognize legal same-sex marriages from other states.
