Has anyone heard of a Mash Potato Bar?  I had a friend go to a wedding last weekend and they had it there.  She said it was a hit.

We just had one at a company event and it was the best thing ever...out oof everything there it was certainly the best...presentation and all...they served the mashed potates in a martini glass and had all the fixings on the side....two thumbs up on this one!!!

I've heard it done the same way as ittagonzalez said, with martini glasses and all the toppings you can imagine to add.

The one thing I have decided for my wedding is mashed potatoes...mmmm, my favorite. But I'm still not convinced that the mashed potato bar is the way to go. Having it in a martini glass seems odd to me.

I've heard of mashed potato bars, but I've only seen them in my dorm dining hall. ;) Not sure I would do this for a wedding.

My brother's wedding they had one.  They had regular mashed potatoes and then sweet potatoes.  Then they had all the toppings.  Sour cream, chives, butter, maple brown sugar etc.  My SIL wanted them served in martini glasses which they did but the glasses took 2-3 scoops of potatoes to look full and the cater didn't allow for that, so about 1/3 of the guests didn't get any.

They looked pretty though in the martini glasses but need to keep in mind it takes more scoops then just putting it on a plate.

I guess they also did Sweet Potato and the sides were a Brown Sugar butter and marshmallows.

i've seen them at a few corporate cocktail party type events, and then once at a wedding last year (always in a martini glass).   Of course, I LOVE Mashed potatos...so I ate an entire glassful during the wedding cocktail hour...and wasn't even hungry by the time dinner rolled around.

So, although I'd love to have one at my own wedding...i fear that my guests will be just like me!   I'll pay $140 for them to eat that night...and they will only eat .50 cents of mashed potatoes!

I've heard of it!  It sounds delish.  Just think of all the possibilities:  garlic mashed potatoes, cheesy mashed potatoes, mashed potatoes with bacon, sweet potato mashed potatoes . . . yum.

um...YUMMMM! I would love love love that. I swear you cannot go wrong with mashed potatoes in any meal.

Sidenote, unrelated to weddings, but related to the glory of mashed potatoes and their ability to go with anything. When I moved to my new school in 8th grade they served mashed potatoes with tacos, rolls, and orange slices (flippin weird right?). Now when I make tacos, I have to stop myself from whipping up mashed potatoes! haha.

But hobochic is right, I would imagine people will fill up on the cheap mashed potatoes when you are paying bucobucks for dinner.

I've heard of it, but I thought it was an urban myth!  You should probably have one at your wedding, though... and you should probably invite me...  My husband prefers bacon and bleu cheese on his mashed potatoes, and I like roasted garlic and cheddar.  YWIA!

It's actually not a new trend, it started a couple of years ago and I've seen them all over the place. Everyone LOVES it so I would go for it!

Our venue offers this and I wish we could afford it. They also do a grits bar (because we're in the south) -- love the idea!

A couple Bees had mashed potato bars at their wedding events.  Mrs. Cupcake had one at her Bridal Shower, and Mrs. Corn had one at her rehearsal dinner.  I think it's such a fun and tasty idea for your wedding!

It's everywhere down here...it's like the Candy Bar of the cocktail hour. :) I love MP, so I'm always happy to see it. Grits Bars are very popular here as well. We went to one that had a shrimp topping. I love shrimp and grits!

As far as running out, that's no good. I'e never been to a wedding where the glass was filled to the brim because you have to have room for the toppings! The caterer sounds like they weren't prepared. Poor SIL and poor guests! I would hate to miss a mp bar!

That would be so yummy. And the grits bar too. Haha I love grits. Sadly though neither would really go well with our beachy wedding. I think it's a cute idea though.

My friend did stations at her wedding and mashed potato bar was one of them. To make it extra "bar" like, the mashed potatoes were served in martini glasses. We had choices of types of mashed potatoes(I think there were 3) and toppings. It was good stuff!

About six years ago a family friend had a mashed potato bar at her wedding. The mashed potatoes were great, but the martini glass presentation was a little weird as they didn't serve alcohol at the wedding!

Yep, we have it on our menus where I work.  It is a big hit, we serve them in martini glasses and you get a scoop of mashed potatoes and get to pick what toppings you want.  We have cheese, bacon, sour cream, shrimp, mushrooms, butter, chives, etc.

Another option that would be a good alternative is a risotto bar!  You can get different types of risotto and the guests can pick their toppings like with the mashed potatoes.  You can do different kinds of cheese, shrimp, mushrooms, etc.

It was a hit at a wedding we went to in SC this past Spring! The only hard part was juggling the martini glass while serving your own plate through the rest of the buffet! Of course if you are having servers plate the food then it isn't an issue! I think the toppings they had were chives, shredded cheese, sour cream, and crumbled bacon! mmmmm

Never seen it done but it sounds good. I've seen them on most catering menus online though. Interestingly, I have never seen gravy listed as a topping option, even though it's considered a staple if you fix it at home or get it from a restaurant.

My fsil had one at her wedding last October.  I thought it was really cute and everyone else seemed to like it as well.  She had a server behind the buffet who would serve the potatoes in wine glasses and then had all the fixings (gravy, chesse, bacon bits, chives, sour cream) next in line.  I highly suggest and recommend having one!

We had one at a mother's day brunch one year. If you like mashed potatoes, you will love a mashed potato bar. You can put out all kinds of toppings like chives, bacon, gravy, cheese, sour cream - anything! It's a fun thing to have an so many people like it.
