I saw a picture in a magizine that used mason jars as candle holders. My wedding is inside a red barn so I thaught that might add a nice touch that went with the decor. Does anyone know of a great place to buy these canning jars? I know they sell them at the grocery store...is that the cheapest place?
hroper22 - I don't know when your wedding is, but I've been saving our own jars and taking the labels off. I'm also asking all my friends to save theirs for me! I think it's nice to have a little variety in the size/shape of jar, and since I have until the end of October, I figure I'll hoard until the beginning of the month and then buy as many as I still need.
If you want matching mason jars, I've found good prices a few places: AC Moore, Wegmans (grocery chain in NY state), eBay, and canningpantry.com. AC Moore has a website, so you can probably compare prices online before trekking around.
Just a warning: the jars tend to get fairly hot, and it helps to have some water or sand at the bottom to keep the candle from sticking. (I don't know if that helps the temperature at all... maybe?)
I found 12 quart-sized at big lots for $6.50, two and a half weeks ago. I'm now looking for some small quilted jelly jars to hang from the trees with tea lights. I saw this a few months ago in Martha Stewart Outdoor Magazine. Martha recommends the water or sand in the bottom of the jars, too.
Anyone know where to get the cute little quilted jars???
I've been getting mine from local thrift stores. That's the cheapest I've found and if you want a variety of sizes and styles they are the best place :)
I got several cases of mason jars for serving our signature drinks. I bought them at www.fillmorecontainer.com. They sell "Mason" labeled quart size jars for $4.55 per case of 12, with a discount if you buy a pallet (224 jars).
They also have quilted jelly jars and lots of other types and sizes of jars.
We're using smaller jars for votive holders (mostly baby food jars I bought off eBay).
I am not sure where you live, but I hit the jackpot on mason jars in upstate NY. I am also having a barn wedding and there is a woman (who I like to refer to as "the crazy jar lady") who has been collecting/buying/selling mason jars for over 20 years. She has over 900 varieties and about 5,000 jars! She sells them for VERY cheap!
