So I have had a bit of a theme change, and have decided to have a masquerade reception. I am making 100 papier mache maskd for the guests, plus extra for decoration. These will be the table centre pieces – some on sticks in vases, others with ribbon ties around the vases. I am making some scrolls to go on the walls, no idea what will go on them yet.
I would love some other suggestions for decorating the venue that will make it more ‘masquerade’. The rest of the theme is medieval, but that is secondary.

Check out these movies for inspiration:
The Man in the Iron Mask (all three versions that I have seen)
Much Ado About Nothing
Meatloafs music video for Its All Coming Back to Me Now
You could do a couple of large scale arrangements of ostrich feathers. Display them on either side of the entry or place one on the cake table and one on the guestbook/gift table.
have chandeliers somewhere
add old fashioned street lamps from a party store or movie prop rental place
drape the entry with satin drapes
make sure you check online sites just after Mardi Gras in New Orleans in February. You will likely score some great bargains.

The movie version of the broadway Phantom of the Opera has some epic masquerade themed scenes. I think the key is rich, bold colors, and drama! And candles. And if you can, rich drapes, dramatic lighting, candleabras, feathers, and lace. Oh, feather fans! I think old classical music score would be cool decoration too.
I am so jealous. Someday I am going to throw myself a birthday and it is going to be a masquerade and we are going to learn to dance ballroom dances and everything.

I hadn’t thought of feather fans, though I am going to be making a peacock fan as I am lucky enough to have access to my sisters birds. I might look at making some smaaler ones for the walls! Thanks for all the great ideas ladies, I will be checking out those movies asap 🙂
