Looking for direction/advice for anyone who has obtained a waiver of the 3 day waiting period for a marriage license. To give a little background, my fiance and I live in Chicago and are having destination wedding in Nantucket in June as that is where we got engaged. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to make it out to Nantucket in enough time before our Friday wedding to get a marriage license at that time (because of taking off time of work for wedding and honeymoon). So, our original idea was to fly out to Boston on a Thursday night in May (a month before the wedding) and apply Friday for license and have it mailed to us after the waiting period, flying back to Chicago that afternoon. Well, I was just informed that we would have to pick up the license in person after the three day waiting period. So, my questions are: if we still continue with our Boston plan, could we apply for waiver on Friday, and if granted, not get married for 30 some days – essentially how good is the marriage license with waiver good for? Additionally, is the waiver easily granted to a reason such as ours since we are not getting married right away? OR, alternately, is there a county (near Boston) anyone knows of that will mail the marriage license to us after the three day waiting period if we apply regularly?

@jacksgirl0112: It’s a Mass state law that you have to pick it up in person. Also, you have to get a license in the city where you are getting married. Getting a waiver is not easy. They actually established this law in order to stop people from coming in gettng a license and then leaving.
However, I’m almost positive that you do not have to actually pick up the license on the 3rd day. I believe you can leave the license sitting there for a period of time prior to picking it up. I would ask how long they will keep it for and if it’s 2 weeks or whatever then go 2 weeks prior and pick it up when you return for the wedding.

My fiance and I also live in Chicago, and will be getting married in Boston (Aquarium reception) in 100 days!
We will be arriving in Boston for showers/final details April 20-23 (arriving 10:30am friday, leaving Monday afternoon). We are planning to head to the office directly from the airport, and I’m calling them tomorrow with some questions so I don’t mess this up…. the website doesnt answer everything!
I’m asking about two topics:
Is a passport sufficient as long as I write down my SSN or do I need my SSN Card as well (I don’t like traveling with it).
If we apply Friday in person, can we pick it up Monday (do weekends count for 3 days later) on our way to the airport? If not, can we pick it up in person June 7th? Too bad someone can’t get it for us (http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/boston-marriage-license-procedure)
jacksgirl0112 I’ll let you know what I find out 🙂

I spoke to a wonderful woman named Terry today, who answered the line “Marriage” (I laughed). She said that we can apply together in person and have someone pick it up for us after the three day period, as long as the person (Mom) has the “little white card” that we get after we apply. OR if you apply on a Friday, you can pick it up Monday- we may do this on our way to the airport Monday morning. I realized when I hung up that I forgot to ask how long they can hold it there.
Also, you just need your SSN, not the card or physical proof.
