OMG. Math is the worst. I seriously used to have nightmares that I would be sitting in some math class and the teacher would be teaching us the most insane math ever and I would be SO lost and freaking out...would wake up and be sooooo relieved. I'm pretty smart in every other subject, so people are kind of surprised when I have a tough time doing like 8th grade math LOL. I really think you are just born with it (or not!)
i'm sooooo glad i'm done with math... though might need some stats for my thesis =(

the FORMULA that I use (that was the question, right?) is:
x * 1.12 = 116.78
whenever anything's been marked UP, you have to account for the price being higher (the 116.78 value). This means you get (x + 0.12*x) = 116.78, or, with some associative math, 1.12*x = 116.78
that's where you get x = 116.78/1.12
I hate math. My mind freaks out when I have to use it for something. Anything, it is so much pressure. But I could do it in homework most of the time. My whole family are math masters, I am the odd duck.
So I have to say that I am a high school math teacher.. and when I meet someone new, they usually say "OMG I hated math in high school!" or "I am SO BAD at math!".. which in turn makes me want to say.. "You're a secretary? I hate it when people answer the phone" or "You're a grapic designer? Don't computers do all that stuff now?"... just because I'm a smart a$$.. and I don't like it when people put down what I love to do for a living.
Poor math, what did it ever do to you?
The only time I hate math is when it is badly taught. Like when they teach you how to do ALL of the math on a calculator. Where's the fun in that?
Or when they say 1+1 = 2... now figure out 4*7...
thanks to everyone. I could come up with the original 104.27 going backwards, but i used the formula and it worked like a charm :D i think it's just something you're either born with or without! I love Excel because it does all my math for me and for my most part i've got all my formulas down.. i'll make sure to write this one down.
@ Beav1279: I don't think someone saying "I suck at math" when you meet should be taken as a put down for what you do for a living. I think it just means they're bad at math...lol.. or maybe they're trying to strike a conversation?!
I've never understood people who don't like math because my mind has always understood the world using math! I will look at something and just break it down mathmatically without even trying...
And I've never like that "I'm too pretty to do math" (well most of David and Goliath's "cutsey" sayings too) because I am fabulous at math and I like to think I look pretty darn good doing it too ;)
So, since we're kvetching about math, who's celebrating Dec 25 this weekend? >.> I can't wait.
Ahhh, but brides who don't do their math well run the risk of getting ripped off!
Math was never a strong point of mine...but I will be crunching some numbers to get my deals!! I have been known to spend as much as I save at the grocery store!!
